Rumbling when braking

Featured Replies

On a new kodiaq (~500 miles) when braking firmly from say 50mph or faster I hear what sounds like a rythmic low-pitched rumbling noise (a bit like the sound you get when a wheel bearing is going). Only get it when braking.

Dealer looked at it and said it might be wheel bearing but they're going to have another look.

Has anyone else had something like this, any ideas on what it could be?

Ta.

Welcome.

Is the vehicle left with them so that the master tech can re-do the PDI, check the suspension, brakes, steering, tyres / pressures etc?

What Kodiaq do you have, petrol / diesel / Manual / DSG / FWD or AWD?

I left it with them first time around, they're going to get in touch and have the master tech to look at it again, I'm expecting they'll keep it for a couple of days when they do that.

The car is a 190 Diesel, AWD auto

A work colleague had something similar on his Audi A4 a week ago.

The dealer fobbed him off and suggested it was tyre related.

Finally agreed to take the car back in citing a potential wheel bearing issue, turned out to be a gearbox bearing which required a complete strip down of the gearbox

I may be well off here, but could it be the ABS 'pulsing'?

The first visit inspection and roadtest by the Master Technician should have had that one cleared up then.

The 'they all do that',  and not the maybe a Wheel Bearing.

The OP / Customer should have left driving the Dealer Principals perk / Courtesy car if no others like for like Premium Model were available.

500 mile new car, 'simply clever;  do not have customers have to ask on social media.   Sort out Customer Services and Skoda Quality Control...

PS

Important to read the Owners Manual,  Driving / Running in,  both for customers and Dealership Sales teams and technicians and make customers / drivers aware of that section.

Fair point, but no, it is just 'firm' braking, not what I'd call 'hard' braking (which I guess could trigger ABS)

?

Did you check your tyre pressures when you collected the car and reset your TPMS?

Did the dealership when you took it back in, and did they inspect the car on the ramp use brake disk cleaner and roadtest it?

Complicated a bit because the dealer I bought from is (many) miles away so I'm using a local to look at it.

Booked in with the master tech for the end of the month. will let you know the outcome then.

If you have any concern over the noise, feel it might be a safety issue, which it is, just call Skoda Assist, they can arrange a Responder that can check the vehicle,

have it transported to a dealership and a courtesy car arranged.

No owner of a new vehicle or even a used one should be panned off by Dealerships and employees that get nice Company Cars or Demonstrators for their use.

Nice safe cars.

Possible bedding in of disk and pad? Though unlikely from what you described .. are you a light braker?

I forgot.   I am as bad as a Skoda Tech.....

**Did they check the wheel bolts / tightness? **

I would have that done today, or do it yourself.

**And please check all 4 tyre pressures if you have not done yourself already.**

Obviously there can be no transport blocks still on a factory trained technician has already passed an eye over your car..

Very strange, the noise seems to have gone away - I wonder if whatever the dealer's tech did while having that first look fixed it up. Perhaps something as 'trivial' as wheel nuts?

Will give it a good run this weekend to see if it is still a problem.

I had the same thing when we fist took the caravan out. That was at about 2k miles though. First noticed it when towing but was also doing it when not towing. After about 100 miles or so it just stopped of its own accord and never did it again. It's on 5k miles now.

Gave it a good long run today and no sign of any rumbling.

Very bizarre.

On the plus side that should save me and the dealer some work.

I have the same now, 10k miles, 2.0 petrol DSG Kodiaq.  Low frequency whine when breaking, also when car de-accelerates itself with active cruise, so I think running gear/CV joint or gearbox.  Not had it looked at yet though.
