Scout issues

Featured Replies

I've had a good look on the forums and I did find a thread with what looks like the same problem as I have. Only had the car two weeks but I have noticed that when powering round a corner or roundabout the back end seems to kick out. It was quite disconcerting  I thought the wheels were loose. I am taking it back under warranty to have it checked out but I did not buy it from a Skoda dealer so they might not find a fault if it is similar to what I've read on here. As I said found topics on here and mirror what I'm finding but except for suggestions that tyre wear, wrong tyres etc. Nobody has said I found this problem and here's what fixed it. Any help will be much appreciated. Also it is a 2008 scout nice car but rubbish stereo no Bluetooth again any suggestions seems to be a lot of Chinese radios on ebay that would be a good replacement.

Welcome.

What tyres are fitted, what pressure are they at.

What does the Service history show for the Haldex servicing, when done.  Who was servicing it.

Did you buy from Ingrams?

Unfortunately there was no service book but there is a whole raft of service invoices and receipts for work done. There is no mention of a Haldex service. I read on here about a Haldex system but I don't understand it, is it a singular item or software etc. Would it be serviced separately. The car was from Henry of Glasgow although it was maintained by a garage in the highlands. There are winter tyres fitted to the rear I haven't checked the pressure. The car had a full service at point of sale.

Are you suggesting that the car has winter tyres on the rear but not on the front?

Thanks AG Falco

I would suggest you get the Haldex oil changed.  Supposedly due at 30,000 miles intervals, some say 20,000 and Skoda, VW, Audi. SEAT even show some places as at 3 years.

See in 'maintenance'.  Maybe worth using Ingrams for that.  Getting it done correctly.

?

What garage in the Highlands serviced it?

Was it Henry's that did the service at point of sale?

Winter tyres only on one axle!?

Change all four tyres.

It was not a main dealer it was as I see by the docs, Stewart of Aberfeldy. since 2014, before that Walkers of Kings lyn. I took on board your suggestion of an oil change and thought I might pre-empt the garage and take an oil change kit with me as has been suggested that Skoda dealers(although my sale garage was not a Skoda dealer) don't seem to recognise that a change of oil and filters are needed. But it seems that there are two options, generation 4 or generation 2.??. Also member Silver 1011 suggested change all four tyres. The garage fitted two new front tyres and left the rears on which are winter. So I might take the rear of and put similar to the front on as well.

This is all much appreciated lads thanks a lot.

Call Andy Stewart in Aberfeldy and ask about the car and what was done or not done.

Not as though there are not plenty cars in the area with Haldex.

The winter tyres can easily be changed, but be sure the haldex is functioning.

?

What tyres are on the rear and the front, and what sizes?

The rear has VRED QUAD5 225/50/17. Believe the front is a summer economy tyre

Be sure they actually physically measure the same size front and rear, ignoring the sizes on the sidewalls.

Try the rears to the front, front to the rears, set your tyre pressures, test drive it.  Safely.

The saga continues. Had the rear tyres checked they were not winter tyres but were both scrubbed to the wire on the inside edge, "tracking problem". Put on new tyres. Delivered my car back to the garage I bought from so they could look at it. They couldn't track it because adjusting bolts were seized on further investigation. Bushes seized and swing arms all seized. Axle removed and all new parts fitted. Tracking done.  Garage paid me for the new tyres fitted plus I had a courtesy car for the period. 5 mile up the road and I hope the garage has plan B because none of the above fixed the problem.  I think I will do a service on the Haldex system.

Is it true that the front subframe is aluminium but the rear isn’t so it’s only a matter of time until the bolts seize up?

So what make and brand tyres are on the front and the back now and what pressure are they inflated to.  I've had 2 Oct 2 scouts and both had worn inners when I brought them.  With 4 wheel tracking done I did 20k on a set of Winter continentals and when I changed them the wear was perfectly equal.

The haldex change is around £75 ish and if it hasn't been done I would get it done - but not convinced this is your issue - I've just had mine done on my Oct 3 Scout as general maintenance.

The last time I had a stepping out experience on a car (A4 Quattro), the rear shocks were gone - that's maybe where I would look.

The garage have done the 4 wheel tracking as part of the fix but the back end still dances about not only when I'm cornering it happens if I overtake and accelerate it gives a wiggle. Does the Haldex change include a new filter ?.

So are all 4 tyres the same - if so what are they (make, size, load etc)

Also if you accelerate hard does the rear squat at all?

The haldex oil change included the filter at my request as I don't think mine had ever been done.  Personally I don't think a Haldex oil change is going to fix your issue - yes it needs maintaining and if there's no proof it's been done I would have it done.....but old oil would lead to possible overheating and loss of rear drive etc, not cause the back end to step.

the lack of a service on the Haldex (full service that is oil and filter) will cause the rear axle to bind. It will also make the car very very intorerant on very small differances between the size of front and rear tyres (we are talking mm here). I had binding issues the oil in the haldex was changed the issues remained. I went to skoda to oider oil and filter to be told there was no filter. I got a filter and re changed the oil in the haldex (not rear diff) the problems were cured

Thanks for the reply, I think that I should do this Haldex service. It seems to be a common thread in most answers. wont harm to get it done ASAP.

cheers Josie

So the saga continues. Sent off for a Kaldex kit, oil and filter. I bought it on ebay £75. Wanted engine numbers etc to ensure the correct filter. Yes you guessed it they sent the wrong filter. We sourced it locally from the VW/Audi dealer, £29.90. No change what so ever still wobbles.

Ok,

So you had 2 new tyres on the front when purchased approx beginning of June, then you have had 2 new rears recently fitted - so all 4 are effectivley new, are they all the same brand, model, size etc.  There were various seized bits that have been freed'up / replaced and its had a tracking done - Can you confirm it was a 4 wheel laser alignment as this covers everything.  Also there should be a report from the tracking,do you have it, can you upload it.

If you don have a copy of the tracking report then I'd be taking it to somewhere like Kwik Fit for a full 4 wheel Geo.  That's where I have mine done and you get the before and after report.  As per my previous post my Old Scout had badly worn inners (not to your extent), so i fitted 4 brand new winter contis and had a 4 wheel geo done.  When the contis were replaced the wear was even :)

The fact the inners were badly worn is a sign something was amis.  Surprised it was sold to you with tyres which were down to the wire if its had a 'full service at point of sale - had you have been pulled that would have been 3 points per tyre and fines.

Also id be locking at the shocks and springs to ensure that there is nothing that looks out of order
