Tempremental Air Con

Featured Replies

Had about given up on the air con but out driving today and outside temp hit 28 degrees and low and behold cold air started flowing, both fans working. I know this won't last as this has been an ongoing issue for the past few years. Garage advised me it would be a costly repair but I'm not convinced, surely a compressor failure would just result in no air con. Anyone else have a similar issue/solution?

Cheers

You are right when you say a failed compressor would not work one day then not work the next. My air con seems a bit slow on the uptake ( like the owner! ) as in blows cool for the first 5 or 10 minutes. After that though I will say it's been blowing extremely cold even though it's been freezing in Carlisle today compared to you as it's only been 25 degrees!

After some searching on here last summer I discovered it could be the pressure valve on the compressor as mine is a Sanden unit. Do you know what brand of compressor you have?

Sadly no, all I know is that's the original on a 2006 1.9Tdi 4x4 but in all other respects it's been a cracking car.

My son's Vrs Octavia is an 06 and had no trouble with his A/C. I've had several vag cars now including a Leon fr and vrs Skodas and all have had issues with the aircon. The Leon had a new compressor fitted before I bought it and that car only had 55k miles on it. My current 07 vrs needed a new condenser last year as it developed a leak around the dryer. So you've been blessed regarding having no issues. Yours could just need a regass as you've not said if it's been done before. After that, common problems on these are holes in the condenser at the front, compressor failures, leaks at the pressure valve, or as I've mentioned faulty pressure valves on the compressors. You'll need to have the system gassed and tested for leaks first.
