Rattling noise from underside of car when driving

Featured Replies

Hi, first post

I have an Octavia estate, 59 reg. It’s been making a rattling noise when driving for some time now, sounds metallic, like there’s an unsecured bolt somewhere. Seems to happen when there’s a jolt from going over a bump, or a hole, or more usually when the speed is constant - the rattle starts up, and just carries on until I decelerate. Doesn’t happen when accelerating, or going round corners.

I’ve had it in the garage, they’ve changed the roll bar links and the vacuum damper, which was unsecured, but there’s no change in the noise. Any ideas?

heat shield ?

The mechanic did mention that the heat shield was touching the handbrake cable, and that he’d bent it back out of the way.

Check the metal guard plates at the back of the rear brake discs. The fixing holes tend to rust away and enlarge, leaving the plate rattling around.

I had the same issue when going over bumps. I thought it was something to do with the exhaust at first. But then it became a constant metallic grinding noise. Found one the rear dust covers completely detached rubbing against the brake disc. Removed the wheel and cut it off. This started after having a new set of tyres fitted. I have read that they can be damaged when wheels are changed.
