America’s tech skills shortage

Featured Replies

Have you ever read a story that says "skills oversupply"?

I'm in one of the roles right now that is often cites in these sorts of stories as being 'desirable'.

Apparently we're all earning £100k plus and batting recruiters away with a stick.

From what I have seen (as the chair of a national group of people in such roles) most of us are on about 1/3 of that headline figure and although there may be many jobs advertised they often don't pay much more or have job specs so high that maybe 3 people in the world are qualified for it or there is so much work it would be impossible for one person to do.

SO tbh I call BS for most of these stories. They're often sourced from the firms that provide training in those areas.

Yeah, I suspect they’re more interested in “containing costs” by way of ample supply.

Yeah; I've seen IT job adverts that ask for "2 years experience in $package Vn": The specified version being so new that even the beta testers don't have the requested experience!

Every time there is a new version of Windows usually.

And instead of filling the vacancy with someone who knows the earlier version AND can easily learn the new version they damage their business by not recruiting anyone!

IMHO there is NOT a skills shortage, there is a shortage of understanding how easy and quick it is for someone with relevant domain knowledge to learn the skills.

When I was a senior manager at a global technology company I recruited many engineers who didn't appear to have exactly the right skills but they had learnt the skills faster than they had learnt how the company systems (purchasing, HR, etc.) worked! Having the extra pair of hands was far more valuable than over stressing everyone else...

I have been in the motor trade since i left school in 1979 . Only ever worked at main dealers , Renault,  bmw , ford , jaguar until a few years ago. I now work for an independent gearbox specialist and wild horses would not drag me back to a main dealer. Little wonder they cannot recruit or retain staff !
