Front brake discs

Featured Replies

Hi, have tried a search, pleanty of info re different brakes but not much on the actual fitting.  Have read and viewed loads of stuff on the o2 series for changing the discs, and am hoping that it is as easy on the o3. Does the whole carrier have to come off to remove the disc, or just the piston part that you take off to change the pads. I am assuming that it will be similar to most more modern cars where this is required. Thanks for any help.

I replaced the front disks and pads on my Octavia and it was relatively quick and easy to do. I took the calipers off (still connected by the flexible hose) to change the disk, this also made it easier to push the pistons in to get the new pads in sufficiently to clear the disk. The caliper is pretty heavy and I tied it up with rope to support its weight. I gave all the bolts a good squirt with penetrating fluid before trying to undo them. My disks were pretty worn and had substantial lips on the edges and I broke that off with a hammer and flat blade screwdriver. I had to do that to allow the caliper and old pads to slide off the disks.

Thanks for the reply, will hopefully be giving it a go on Sunday. Will try and take some photos if I remember.

As I found to my cost many years ago, hammering the edge of brake discs caused damage to the wheel bearings.

Hope yours are ok.

Having done disc and pads on several of my cars over the years I have learned that brute force is always the last option. My discs have lipping, but retracting the piston should be enough to give room to remove the Caliper. May not do it today as no shade on the drive, will try later in the week.

If you could take some pictures it would be greatly appreciated. I'll need to do mine soon. Thanks

Will do. May try Friday, failing that it may have to be the following weekend.
