Engine died – Please help

Featured Replies

Skoda Fabia Elegance, 16v 1400 petrol, 58k miles

Drove back all fine, the following morning,

turned ignition and all I got was the sound like a fast ticking from the dashboard.

Can smell petrol. Any ideas?

Many thanks

When you turn the key to start it powers a relay under the dashboard (on the fuse panel). This relay powers a bigger switch (starter solenoid) under the bonnet.  The solenoid switches power to the starter motor to turn over the engine.

A healthy relay makes one quiet click when powered. Continuous clicking suggests a fault (fuse board usually above the footwell).

A healthy solenoid makes one solid knock when powered. No noise suggests a dead solenoid or its associated fuse (fuse box under the bonnet).

No response from the starter motor suggests a sticky starter gear, a failed starter motor or a blown starter fuse (under the bonnet).

From your description I'd look at the starter relay on the internal fuse panel.

Good luck!

What year is your Fabia?

Does the battery light come on when you turn the key to the position where all the other fault lights self-test?

HI

06. Yes, battery light comes on.

No relay in the solenoid circuit then, ignition switch and then wire to solenoid.  The latter has been known to break just where it goes into the 1-pin connector at the starter.

Is the ticking definitely from behind the dash, not the solenoid?

What's the engine code?

Hi

I will do some further investigation re: solenoid

and get back to you re: engine no.

Many thanks for your help

I think the engine code will be BBZ, BKY or BUD, should be on a sticker on the upper cambelt cover.
