O2 vRS 2.0 Tsi - Rattling noise after changed timing chain

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have Octavia 2 vRS with a CCZA engine (Tsi), car was driving fine without any issues, but decide to make a larger maintenance, as the car is on 235k km.

Even do the service history was available and the car was driving fine without usual chain noise on start up.

Prior changing I was looking at channel 093 and the value varied between 3.9 to 4.0.

Anyway ordered an genuine brake fluid, antifreeze and a complete timing set (not genuine , as there was no single part for a kit and extremely difficult to identify part by part.)

My local dealership was not able to give me estimate, received two completely different offers from same local dealership .. the feedback of their work was not good, so decided to go with the person who is taking care of my cars for the last 10 years.

Bought it from this guy , provided the VIN and he send me the right kit. The cover was genuine one, remaining parts were manufactured in Czech republic (as per seller, haven't open all of the chains to see and confirm).

Last week took the car and it was driving fine, might be even a bit better, not sure if it's related to changed oil or timing kit. (as per mechanic sparks, cables and etc were in good condition, so he did not change them).

Since day 1 after the change the car had a different sound from before the change, but in the last few days the sound become much worse and it's definitely a chain noise.

When cold it's not so noisy , but when hot and I turn it off the noise is heard loudly even inside the car.

Here is a short video , sounds are worst when engine is warmer.

There is no change in the performance, no visible oil leaks , no vcds errors ..

Checked the 093 group and the value is -3.8 (correct minus sign upfront of the value).

Is there a way to see if timing chain slipped from synchronization and it's not changed properly or it's most likely an defective part ?

There was a way to check on my previous Golf 5 (diesel) if timing was properly set, but not sure if it's the case with Tsi as well.

For my bad luck, the mechanic is away for the next two weeks and I have doubts if I can drive the car in this condition or not.

Any ideas would be more than welcome, have a VCDS cable , but could not check the chain, as I'm not qualified enough and don't have equipment as well.

Regards,

Alex

Well, no one can give you any advice, must be checked by a mechanic who knows his job

Bought parts are surely not original ones, in Czech Republic are not produced any of these for EA888 timming parts. Original producer is Morse, part of BorgWarner, chains in Poland, tensioners in Italy, etc.

No trustworthy offers, notice no marking on the tensioner nor the wheel ...

The only genuine part was the cover. I was aware the rest parts are not genuine, but it was said they are no Chinese as well. The guy have sold plenty of those kits and has 100% positive feedback.

 Original message from seller:

Dear Alex,

the timing chain cover is an original VW part.
The timing chain kit is a normal spare part, in good quality (manufactured in Poland and tschechia, like the original parts comes from), we only sell the same parts as we use ourself for repair engines for other workshops and VW / Audi / Seat / Skoda.

Anyway, it might be a part defect or a slipped chain, as the values in group 093 changed slightly.

Why VAG did not make a single kit like the 038198119A ..

All of the info points to an issue with Revo stage 1.

In the last 200km there is close to none rattling noise , seems like it's a heat related or isolated case, nevertheless would keep my ears "open" :)

  • 3 years later...

Did you ever find the cause of the noise ? , my Vrs is now doing the same thing
