Oil type in 1.4 TSI 4x4

You do know what "must be > 36 months" means, yes? Last I looked, 4 years > 36 months. So no contradiction there.

Yes, that's why I said it, VAG's minimum requirement is greater than 36 months, hence 4 years meets their minimum.

When I first read it I interpreted as the 36 months was their blanket shelf life for all their own oils, what I can now see is that it is their minimum shelf life for anyone wishing to claim their oil meets VAG's standards.

Engine oil in sealed containers will last for years imo. Just shake well before use..:blush

Today's lunch cost more than the oil!

I could always use the oil as a dressing :excl:

  • 2 months later...

Only joined the forum today, so I'm a bit late to the fray on this one.

I took my car to France two weeks after I bought it, so thought it prudent to take spare oil in case it was an oil guzzler, something I knew that VAG new petrol engines have been known to do in the past.

I saw the specs as posted above in the handbook, so I went to the local dealer to get some. I'm a bit of a stickler for getting it right because I know that in the event of an engine failure, if Skoda can prove that I haven't used the correct oil, they'll likely nullify the guarantee.

Anyway, my dealer doesn't have it in stock yet, but luckily the parts manager is a good egg, so did a bit of internet research whilst I waited and came up with https://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Skoda_Kodiaq_2.0_2018/p/car-accessories/engine-oils-and-car-fluids/engineoils/5w30-engine-oil/?521772532&0&cc5_247

He said this meets the specs laid down by VAG, not cheap I know, but for me it's peace of mind.

Welcome,.

That price is ridiculous, and that was the spec before the new spec new cars are leaving the factory with.

You could have got the spec in that link in any Filling Station, Supermarket with s car section or at a motor factor / parts shop.

4 litre or 5 litres in Asda is around £20 -£22 for VW 504 / 507   5w 30 FS LL.

What kind of dealership, was it not VW group one?

A dealership that had no VW 504 / 507 5w 30 FS LL oil, like bottles of Castrol, and an employee had to look up the correct oil?

& They had no VW 508/509 0w 20 FS Long Life.   What VW fill now at the factory, and they show for the very latest engines.

Hi Offski,

Whilst I can't disprove what you say at present, normal off the shelf oils do not meet the latest VAG specs according to my dealer (and yes, they are an approved Skoda dealer).

The guy I dealt with had nothing to gain by saying this and sending me to Eurocarparts. He did find one other that met VAG the specs, which if memory serves, was from Shell and was even dearer..

All that notwithstanding, I did 2000 miles in France and the car used no oil at all, so I'm not unhappy. I just hope they have the correct oil in stock when it's due it's first service.

I had the same trouble with my previous car - a Hyundai Santa Fe. There was an underbonnet sticker stating specifically what Shell oil should be used, and again I had trouble sourcing it. Guess where I found that one ??

Ironically, when the car was serviced, they used a bulk Mobil oil !! At least I did the right thing.

Where is your Dealer, a Skoda Dealership in Somerset.

and is that the Technician / Master Technician saying 'off the shelf oil to VW 504 / 507' does not meet the latest spec.

A Skoda Dealership had Castrol, Quantum or Fuchs, Mobile or some oil through the back to the same spec as the link you posted,

Maybe no Customer Litres of VW 508 /509 with is £17 when they do have it.

They are right when talking the latest spec VW 508 /509,   but then you never posted a link for VW 508/509.  you posted VW 504/507

As earlier posts have said, my Bear (1.4TSI 125HP) does not have a sticker in the engine bay to say which oil to use.  I have just been looking for 508.00 as specified in the manual but no stock in Halfords.  There is so much confusion on this topic, amongst lots of people who seem to know what they are talking about, (and I am not one of those people), that I will hope that I don't need any top up oil before the first service in April 2019 and hope that my Skoda service Dept have sorted it all out by then.  I was also looking for G13 Coolant in Halfords, but no joy on that either!!

Even Sainsburys, Tesco, Morrisons and Asda will sell you 504/507 oil. Is that not off the shelf?

might not want to name the employee needing retraining or just training, but others should be told the Dealership name and the person job title.

The Dealer Principal needs to get the staff sorted out and make them aware if they do not know to go ask someone that does, and for sure,

not taking pot luck.

Yep, main dealer in Somerset, and yes, you're right about the specs - I hadn't noticed that !! 05surveyors comment above bears out what I'm saying about availability though, I'm as confused as he is now.

Please explain, and could you tell me where I can get a litre can of oil near Bridgwater in Somerset that meets the specs that VAG lay down. I'd be most grateful to get theis cleared up.

For the WLTP / RDE VW got prepared with VW508 / 509 0w 20 FS LL oil,  to get better Co2 g/km & Fuel Economy under testing, and now there are GPF's on Petrol Engines.

So latest spec will be required in some cars.   But so far if your car is OK on 5w 30 FS LL then that is what you need.

If it left the factory with VW508 /509 xman can put the link on only using 0.5 litre of other oils to top up.

But that was the case with other oils according to VW for year.

Whoever in the Dealership or Motor Group should get the oil in for the Parts Desk and the display cabinet.

The Workshop needs their bulk supply as well.....

In this thread an Audi dealer was selling for £7 delivered near past sell by date VW 508/509.

Yes I know, but it's not 504/507 oil I need, it's 508. I was obviously pointed to the wrong stuff by the dealer !

^^^ ?

So what job does the person do as a job in the dealership that wrongly advised you.

Full time employees, see hundreds of customers and are quick enough if a car is wrong to say the Customer must have used wrong oil, fuel, coolant,. windscreen wash, air in the tyres etc.

^^^ exactly this

General information

Specifications 508 00 and 509 00 concern the so-called “VW Blue Oil” for the latest generations of engines from VW. The specifications demand an oil in viscosity class SAE 0W-20 with a reduced HTHS viscosity of at least 2.6 mPa.s. This allows fuel savings of at least 4% to be achieved. The first of these engines have been available on the market since the end of 2015. Specifications VW 508 00 and 509 00 are not backwards compatible with previous VW specifications. In contrast, specification VW 504 00 can be used wherever older VW specifications for petrol engines are required, for example.

For diesel engines, specification VW 507 00 can also be used for the corresponding older diesel specifications. R5 and V10 TDI engines up to model year 2006 are the exception. These engines must be filled with an engine oil according to VW 506 01 (TITAN Supersyn LONGLIFE PLUS SAE 0W-30).

For VW engines that require VW 508 00 / 509 00, engine oils with specification VW 504 00 / 507 00 can currently be used as an option.

XMAN, thankyou, now it's making sense.

My dealer wasn't wrong in what he recommended I buy, as what he recommended is compatible and he obviously didn't have what I needed in 1litre bottles.

And thankyou for pointing out where it can be purchased, that's extremely helpful. Hopefully my car won't burn much and I won't need it.

MR Offski - I won't name and shame my dealer, firstly because he wasn't wrong, and secondly, they always seem to try their best (unusual in this cutthroat market)  during my ownership 3 Skodas and have treated me fairly as far as I know.

If there's a fault here, it's probably mine rather than theirs. It was a few weeks ago that this oil question arose, and I'm old and I've been to bed since then.

The thing is the Oil recommended was just as the Castrol Edge 5w 30 FS LL that sits in every Skoda Dealership normally,

which is the same as Quantum, Mobile, Shell, Fuchs, Comma, Asda, Tesco or any other VW 504 / 507 on a self that is not near £17 a litre.

If they have no parts department then i can understand them not having Sales Oil.

Not sure where their boxes of complimentary oil went.   Not all put 1 litre in new cars anymore, that was just back in the 'Oil User' days.

  • 7 months later...

Had my 1.4 TSI Kodiaq serviced today, it's first @ 9,500 miles.

I asked what oil they'd used, VW507 or 508.

The girl on reception went to fetch a technician who came out and confirmed that they use VW507.00 on everything. Regardless of model, engine or service interval, they fill it it with VW507.00.

So it seems the 508 is used from the factory, in order to satisfy the quoted emissions / fuel economy figures, after that it's business as usual for VAG :D

How old is it? Mine just went past 14,000 this week and is now 14.5 months old... it’ll want a service some time in the autumn.

I assume you’re planning on keeping the car long-term? Otherwise I don’t see the benefit of servicing it more than twice during the PCP term... that’s all I’m planning on.

And if they put the inferior* oil in at first service, maybe doing that later is better anyway!

*is it inferior? Is it actually any different in any meaningful way?

It's pretty much bang-on 12 months old. We took delivery last June. It is on the fixed service interval (10,000 miles / 12 months).

The car is a 'keeper' so fresh oil once a year is preferred for me, its owned outright rather than on a PCP / PCH.

Our previous car was on a PCH and my primary objective was to keep servicing costs to an absolute minimum, it got serviced once in the 2 years / 18,000 miles we had it.

I'm always suspicious of things that are used to reduce emissions and improve fuel economy, there are often trade offs to be made, and from what I'm led to believe they're often related to a reduction in long term durability. The VW508.00 oil has a lower viscosity @ 0W20. I'm no engineer but I'm guessing this reduced viscosity reduces friction and improves fuel economy?

VW507.00 is 5W30, so a bit thicker. Not as good in terms of fuel economy but sticks to the moving parts a little better and helps reduce engine wear? I guess there could be a counter-argument that the thinner oil heats upper faster and therefore gets to all parts of the engine quicker?

Who knows, like I say, I'm not an engineer, but VW507.00 is much more readily available and as a result is quite a bit cheaper (I'll be self-servicing once out of warranty). I think I feel happier that this is in the engine now, rather than VW508.00, I've been using genuine Skoda Quantum II VW507.00 oil in my older Skoda's for several years now.

Each to their own I guess.
