Upgarde Options

Featured Replies

Hi all and TIA, my  Octy has the headunit pictured below (Bolero I think but unsure) I am wondering what my upgrade options are using Skoda equipment to get sat nav, car play etc I am looking at the model in the other picture from a breakers I know cp will have to be removed but is it a straight swap and will it give me the thing I listed earlier?

Cheers.

Yes and No. The stereo you have linked is an Amundsen MIB2 and it will fit straight in after CP has been removed but to get the nav and SmartLink working it’ll need extra coding done outside the dealer network. You will also need the green tipped CarPlay USB (5Q0 035 726 E) as well and a generic FAKRA connection GPS antenna for the factory nav. The install is plug and play after shaving down a couple of connector plugs. It would help for you to have VCDS so you can send an ad map to whoever is going to code the unit and to activate the nav menu and compass in the Maxidot.

If you just want plug 'n' play then you could go for a pre-hacked unit like this, I bought mine from the same seller

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-Skoda-OEM-Part-Columbus-Navigation-MIB-2-with-DAB-no-SIM/292642406302

This screen looks to be a bargain too

You'll still need the USB and GPS antenna. The pre-hacked versions bypass CP, if you do a VCDS auto-scan loads of CP warnings will show up but everything works.

@SashaGrace are you sure that is a MIB2?  looks the same as my MIB1 Amundsen.  Just don't want OP to go getting it thinking it'll work if it wont.  How do you tell the difference?  I thought the Amun' MIB2 unit had a bigger screen?

The 6.5 inch screen has less of a bezel on it than the 5.8 inch screen which uou can see if you look at the Bolero in the OP’s car and the unit linked very closely, and the glovebox unit has no CD drive which is the main difference. Only the Columbus has the big 8 inch screen on the Pre FL (though the 8 inch screen does work on the MIB2 Amundsen).

Hi Sasha, after reading your build log I noticed you sent the unit to have some coding done in Poland can I ask what coding that was and who did it for you, the dealer I use has said they will fit,  remove the CP and code it for the maxidot .

TIA

The CP removal will give you the radio, the media player and the phone functions but the nav, voice commands and SmartLink are outside of their remit. The Maxidot coding is probably just to get the compass and Nav menu in the Maxidot. Message Pab567 on here to talk about coding. He did a great job on mine and I’m sure many more members stereos as I recommend him to everyone.

Thank you very much Sasha, I will message him shortly.

Lots of cars stollen for parts in that part of the world, and pre cracked doesn’t instill confidence. I assume you confirmed it is from a legit source?

For the mk2 superb, Nov was stolen all the time, precisely because there was an upgrade market.

Not saying yours is, just raising the point for those buying used units.

am i right in saying once CP is removed the car in question loses the ability to have dealer coded sat nav again as the fec codes of the new mib will never match an older car that could never be specified with it in the first place.

This thread seems to suggest that

Don’t know and in all honesty I’m not really bothered as my nav works perfectly well after the third party coding as do all the enabled features. My dealer did the CP removal but couldn’t do anything else with the unit because they didn’t have experience in changing the unit from one to another, only replacing like for like. My unit now also has the Performance Monitor (Skoda Sport HMI) activated via FeC/SWaP codes.

did you have a mib1 with the 5.8" screen ?

i have a seat with the mib1 system which i cant even update the maps in without shelling out £100 for a new sd card. as they never did mapcare until 2015 cars. i am not sure if skoda was the same.

i am just concerned about getting CP removed and then losing the ability to code another unit via the dealer. although as you mentioned units can be hacked and activated.

did you fit a mib2 std or plus (harman unit)  i am not sure what skoda call the equivalent.

I had the 5.8 inch MIB1 with no nav. I now have the MIB2 std (Amundsen) made by TechniSat and I have used the 8 inch screen as all MIB2’s can run the 8 inch screen. My nav system is working like factory and it came with an SD card which takes updates and works just like it does in a car that came with a MIB2 from new.

yes the mib2 i have is a technisat too only have the 6.5 screen but looking for an 8".  i am surprised vw decided to fit the crappy 5.8 system to mbq cars its really slow and the resolution is poor.

Looks like an RCD330+/340 with the correct bezel for an Octy. Won’t be as fluid a proper Euro spec MIB unit but will probably be a little more OEM look and feel than the android powered units.
