Knocking noise?

Featured Replies

My Octi has developed a knocking sound when going over speed-bumps or along very bumpy roads.

It sounds as though it's coming from under the car somewhere just behind the engine bay. I can also, just, feel it when I put my left foot on the foot rest. It happens when the front wheels go over a bump and again when the rear wheels go over the bump. The strange thing is, it's only noticable when the enigine is cold; after about 10-15 minutes of driving you can't hear it.

I know it's not the 'usual' rusted though exhaust bracket, as that has recently been fixed, and is still OK. The suspension has also had a quick check and everything appears to be OK.

Anyone have any suggestions as to what it may be?

Thanks

Body in the boot?

Anti-roll-bar links.

my Octy 4x4 is doing the same, still under warrenty when I called they said it souns like ARB too. I've had it up on the ramps and could not find anything myself but then I'm more used to trucks and tanks!!

I had a similar problem on an old BMW. It had a rotten bush, the car was about 13 years old and when I eventually tracked the problem down it was still in place and you couldn't tell while it was on the car but once out the rubber was just breaking down/rotten. That one was on the rear, but it sounded as if it was knock coming from the front.

It may well be worth getting it up in the air and checking all the bushes. What a good excuse to replace with poly ones.

Failing that, whilst cold, shake your exhaust pipe it may have a loose/broken mount, causing the pipe to knock the underside of your car on the speed bumps?

Anti-roll-bar links.

That could be it, but he said knocking noise, and the arb links usually sound more like a clunking noise. I had the same noise in my 4x4 and when i checked, the little plastic gasket between the bushing and the arb was out of place. Just losen the bushing, slide in the gasket and retight it again.

anti roll bar bushes, doubt its the links. Quick and easy to change, ive done tons of them, very common.

Just an update on this.

The roll-bar bushes have been replaced and I now have a clunk/knocking free car again.

I had my ARB drop links replaced thismorning at Caffyns Ashford, noise has gone, great job

I am having a similar problem with my 60K 02 VRS. Skoda in Perth seem to think that it is the front anti-roll bar bushes. the mechanic there says he has only seen this once before and that was on another VRS. Trouble is that when the car is on the ramps there seems to be no play at all, but on bumps and drain covers etc it knocks all the time. I am about to seek a second opinion. Hope this has been some help.
