Bluetooth and iphone issues

Featured Replies

I hope someone can help me with straightforwad info. I have a 2010 superb with columbus rns510. It will not work with my iphone x or any iphone but works with samsung. My question is do i have to get a different bluetooth unit and if so what one. I really dont want to have to fit a parrot system like i did in my last skoda

I think your iPhone is too new for the onboard Bluetooth unit (the BT is a separate module from the RNS-510) ... Android devices usually don't have such issues ... you could exchange the BT module for a slightly new one, but the latest one, part no. 3C8035730E, was put on the market mid 2014 ... the different unit would cost you some 300-400 GBP, depending on the condition and seller

3C8035730-E version, I highly doubt that at that price

Read through some other topics on the same matter, I'd hate to be the guy who said "I told you so" ... to the best of my knowledge and research, the A version was released before 2010, no way it is fully compatible with iPhones that are newer then 4S

Forgot to add, first check which unit you currently have ... it is mounted underneath the passenger seat (or check with VCDS diagnostics if you have it)

It depends what you mean by fully compatible. In theory, if both the BT module and iphone support HFP, they should be fine regardless of version.

@Merger18 have you checked what BT module you currently have fitted?

In theory

The heaviest word so far ... :D ... I know of several Skoda/VW RNS-510 & BT module equipped cars where the owners had upgraded their phones ... those that are on Androids have nothing to worry about, those with iPhones (say 6 -> 8) can't pair their new phones to the car anymore (some just updated their iOS versions to the newest one), the dealerships also don't have any usable info to give them apart from that the phone is much to new to be supported ... something must be different then, and its not just the iPhone ... I know regarding PSA vehicles, they were doing FW upgrades for the nav devices, just for the sake of phone compatibility (apart from some minor stability improvements)

I really dont know yet what unit is in mine only that its a 2010 car apparently from 2011 or 12 the units did work with iphone. I only need it to make and receive calls nothing too major. I have a parrot system but dont want to deface the car by fitting it

Built in 2010, the unit would be using the 2.1 core spec. That is sufficient for audio streaming. The current core spec is 5.x though no current VAG models use it. The 2018 model year cars still use Bluetooth 4.2. Speed wise, there is no difference to the old 2.1 standards, but there are several differences to the stack and the profile layers.

"Normally", 4.2 should be fully backwards compatible with 2.1. I say normally because in the meantime, there are multiple versions of the profiles used in audio streaming. (A2DP)

It is possible for a 4.2 product to support the later profile and not the earlier one.

Normally end device makers will have both profiles in the stack, but this add cost.

I can tell you that my latest phones all have issues with my RNS-510 (Dec-2012 build).

Typically this means that I cannot adjust the audio volume or tracks either from the phone, or the head unit. I normally need to turn on and off BT on the phone and it would work.

I would not bother replacing the BT unit. At 300€ it simply is not worth it.

Either buy a modern unit from that fellow on here that sells them, or replace it with a 500€ aftermarket one which is faster. The major downside to the aftermarket route in my opinion is that none of them work with the built in Mic. I have no clue why that is, but they dont.

What's your location? If you're close to me I have a couple of different modules you can try before you buy.

I live in northern ireland but thanks for the offer it would have been handy

If it's a 2010 car, there is a good chance it's fitted with an rSAP only BT module which tallies with the Samsung working but no iPhone's. Swapping for a relatively recent BT module that supports HFP will likely solve the problem, at least for phone calls.

The first step is to confirm what BT module is fitted, it's probably under one of the front seats at a guess :)

Will post number today

5no 035 730b is the module in the car if thats any help

Yes - rSAP

No - HFP, PBAP, A2DP

Made mid-2009. The direct successor with the features you'd want would be the 5N0 035 730 D.

Ok thanks ordered one on ebay last night and buyer said it was working with his iphone so will give it a go dont know if it needs programming or not

Excellent, so as vborovic mentioned, that module only supports rSAP which is why it's not working with your iPhones.

I'd probably try one of these:

- 5N0 035 730 D @ £60 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/202384255077

- 3C8 035 730 B @ £110 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/202379232040

The latter is slightly newer but either should give you at least calls and some degree of music streaming, not sure if they'll give you track names or skip functionality.

They will probably need coding to your car after fitting with VCDS or similar.

Thanks not worried about music streaming to be honest as have loads of songs on the hard drive
