Buying suspension... what else do I need??

Featured Replies

It's been a good 15 years since I changed the suspension in my MkII Golf G60 so I've forgotten what I need to be doing and also I'm too old to be bothered to do it myself anymore, so if I changed my struts & springs what else should I be giving the garage to replace at the same time? From memory, it was bump stops & top mounts, but I have no idea if they're even called that anymore and if there's anything else as tech has moved on since a 1990 model car! :)

Most garages can get parts within an hour/same day from local motor factors so I wouldn't waste time shopping for parts.

Expect the usual odds n ends such as bushes, drop links and such which may be found to be worn or destroyed trying to remove due to corrosion.

It's a bloke at his house, recommended by my mate, so might not have that quick get facility hence the question.

I'm thinking more along the lines of things it's prudent to change as a standard precaution, such as the top mounts and suchlike. Similarly, my springs might be fine, but while they're off and for the small expense, I'm changing them so I'm not paying for a job twice if one snaps. That's more where I'm coming from rather than things that might or might not be broken upon inspection.

I reckon you've got all the boxes ticked then.

Just whip the old ones off and bolt the new preassembled units on, any collateral damage can be addressed as required.

If you're looking to save a quid I'd say the old bump stops and gaiter would be in reusable nick.

An hour and a half per side for the fronts for a steady DIYer, much less for the rears.  The worst bit I find is spreading the front hub carrier to release the strut.

Which reminds me, I must make a Chinese copy of the correct tool for next time as a ground hex key isn't ideal.

Bloke is a one man band type garage; quoted me for labout only £175 + vat to change it all. Sound fair?

With the age of the car I would do drop links whilst your at it and make sure you have new pinch bolts for the bottom of the hub strut clamp, they usually shear off when try to remove them.

you may also want to check if the 3 ball joint nuts connected to each wishbone can be un-done before hand as they may shear with age

And the price...?

Droplinks around £12 a corner, pinch bolts about £6 each

Sorry, I meant is the £175 plus vat about right for changing the four corners, but cheers for that as well?

Price seems fair to me. Assume you will need to get the wheel alignment done elsewhere

Yeah, there's a place I would take it to regardless, so that's an extra 60.
