Choosing a DVD player - still confusing!

Featured Replies

Following on from my choosing a TV thread,  it seems like our new TV might not like our 13 year old DVD player.

DVD's got a scart, Telly hasn't.

DVD's got these:

Telly's got this:

Would it make more sense to give up and get a blu-ray player?

If I get a new blu-ray player do I need to make sure it's a 4K Ultra HD HDR one so it'll match the Telly?

TIA

Bin it.

If you've got a 4k telly you need a Blu-ray player that is capable of upscaling. You're going to find now that most of your DVDs will look crap. Blu-rays will however look amazing and sound great if you've got a soundbar and sub.

100% agree.

There's no point in buying/keeping a DVD player if your TV has HDMI connections, just get a Blu-Ray player and play either DVDs or Blu-Rays (but buy only Blu-Rays from now on).

I bought a 4k Bluray last year to treat my telly and I've not looked back. The discs however are rather expensive (£20-£25 generally-although 2 for £30 is common at HMV on slightly older discs), so unless you really want the very best quality then I'd go for an upscaling Bluray player. BluRay still looks better than 4K streaming images anyway (unless they use HDR). I still use my Sony Bluray (which upscales) and a Sony would probably pair nicely with your telly as there would be shared remote control possibilities with an HDMI connection :)

BTW I'd avoid the LG 4k machines a they get a bad write up for noise whilst playing

Blurry photo as I was far too interested in getting it out of the box and all plugged in.

Decided to go for a 4k Blu ray player, so I can get and play better quality Blu ray DVD's.

The sound bar is awesome - very immersive B)B)

Whoot whoot. I have a Panny 4k Bluray (can't tell which one you have, but they often have the same basic internals) and it produces fantastic pictures. Ok it doesn't support Dolby Vision (although some of the newest and expensive Pannys do) but it's HDR images are still stellar and overall it was worth every penny. Congrats :)

It's this one:

Although I have to say, if anyone's interested, RS have some astonishing clearance deals on at the moment.  E.g.:

https://www.richersounds.com/clearance-bargains/in-store/82/sony-smart-3d-blu-ray-player.html?instore

And I got a discount on the Soundbar just because the box had been opened (looking at it, we were pretty sure it hadn't been unwrapped and all the accessories were still sealed in their bags:

Picture quality on standard DVD's is pretty much the same as how they came.  Wifey was out and the neighbours on holiday, so the soundbar was tested and really rumbles nicely.

Chap that carried it out to my car was really interested (genuinely) in the vRS.  He's got an older Fiesta ST (150) and is thinking of changing to a Fabia vRS.
