Rear shock removal.

Hi all, are the rear shocks on a 2007 mk2 vrs locktighted on? As I'm struggling to get them removed to fit my coilover shocks.

Which end are you struggling with?

The tops I'm struggling with.

Mine weren't as I recall however they were quite corroded, the bolts are at an odd angle.

 

Ensure you have a long enough extension on your breaker bar/ratchet to get square on, rounded bolt heads will ruin your day.

Thanks for the reply. Think I'll let a garage sort it out.

Ah yeah, pain in the arse. Get some penetrating fluid on them, a long extension and a big breaker bar. Oh and some Savlon for your knuckles ;)

Its also worth removing the lining to get better access to the bolts and use a six sided socket to avoid rounding the bolts.

Thanks for the help. Think I'm going to leave it for the garage to sort out now.

Did mine 2 weeks ago, just used my battery windy gun, they did not argue with that, nor did the bottom bolts, once I got the angle, took about 1 1/2 hours both sides.

I tried a rattle gun but it wasn't powerful enough.

Something's not right.

 

A good impact wrench will twist the head right off if the bolt is rusted in place as they're not that big.

 

I'd still advocate a long breaker bar and steady pressure, something's got to give and if it shears just drill it out and fit a new bolt.

 

Due to the odd upside down angle, you are turning them the correct way... Just saying!

Haha yeah I had to double check but I am turning the right way. My compressor isn't the best so I think that was the issue. But I'm going to take it into the garage to get done. Their compressor will be more powerful than mine.

It's a bugger when you get hung up on a snag like that, so close yet so far.

Yeah it's the only thing stopping me having the complete setup on the car.

What tools have you been using?

 

I reckon even a ⅜" ratchet would be strong enough to shear the bolts, assuming the socket didn't split.

 

You have tried to get as much leverage as possible, length of pipe/big spanner/adjustable wrench on whatever you used to turn the bolts.  Even if you are putting maximum force on the main tool just that little extra additional torque from an extension of some kind goes a long way.

Tried a breaker bar, rattle gun didn't want to shear the bolts as the car is my daily. Both 3/4 inch drive.
