Would hot water get this out?

Featured Replies

A few years ago, whilst living on a busy terraced street, I reversed my car into a lamp post, resulting in the small dent in the rear bumper (pictured) :crying:.

The local body shop quoted me £180 to fix it - which is an insane amount (in my view)!

I've seen a few things online that some boiling water poured over the dent, and a quick push from the other side will pop it right out. Indeed, I use this same trick on my whitewater kayaks and works brilliantly.

One problem is that I don't know how to get access to the other side of the dent. Seems quite well surrounded by other stuff!

Does anyone know if: 1. This boiling water thing is a good idea, and; 2. How to access the other side of the dent?

Many thanks!

Probably worth a go, from a DIY point of view. I'd probably take the bumper off though - only way of properly getting at the other side.

The black marks appear to be transfer from what I can see, so this might get removed/improved with a clay bar and some polish.

Thanks Wardy.

Any idea how easy/difficult it is to remove the bumper?

Not done it on a Fab Mk2, but have on the Mk1 and the Octy.

Pretty straightforward overall. There might be a guide on here somewhere for the Mk2, or check YouTube?

Have you tried a suction cup dent puller?

hardware stores have them for around a fiver.

Another technique is to use heat from a hair dryer or heat gun and compressed air.

Drill small hole in the middle, insert a self tapping screw, warm with a hair dryer, pull out with pliers, fill hole, rub down, primer, paint..............

The suction cup might be a good shout. Would mean not having to remove the bumper!

Nope! :D

I would have thought that the time for getting back with hot water has passed, I’d expect that would only work well if a day had passed since this damage was done, that price to fix sounds okay to me if you can’t try either of the suggested methods yourself.

Never had much luck with the suction pullers. Some are available with adhesive to firmly attach to the area, then remove and clean afterwards.

That might be worth a try.

Hot water is a good shout. Looks like paint transfer from lampost, so potentially easy fix if it pops back out. Don't consider drilling hole, this is a bumper off scenario as it is accessible. To polish out if there's paint hazing, then Menzera 203S compund on rotary mop. Try clay bar first though. Follow up with Collinite 426 wax on damp cloth and buff off with dry microfibre cloth and you'll hopefully never see it.
