New Superb - TSI or TDI?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Nice to meet you all. I’m in the process of selecting my new car and decided that would be a new Superb Saloon. A bit of background - car will be used each day in the city for around 10km one-way to my workplace and occasionally for long weekends , which might happen every second or third weekend.

The dilemma I am facing - TSI or TDI. I am not that knowledgeable , but I am afraid 10km twice a week day( so 100km a working week in total) and 400-500km on highway out of the city once every three weeks won’t be the best treatment for a diesel engine. Hence I decided to go for a TSI. Do you think that’s a good decision?

In my country what they offer and what I chose is the TSI 132kW 180hp as I think the lower-powered engine TSI 150hp will be weak for a Superb. Now the problem - TSI 180hp will not be offered from next month until it is replaced by the new version 2.0 TSI 190hp, which sounds pretty good and I would definitely go for that one. However that 2.0 TSI engine will be offered only when the Superb facelift comes out, so that would mean I have to wait for spring to come. Also currently no new orders of 180hp could be made , so I can get only what's available in the store.

I also have to mention the dealer has pretty nice promos right now, I don’t know how are the levels of equipment in the UK, but here you get 20% off on Business, Edition and L&K. So L&K is the highest, that's the same in the UK, next is Edition and then Business.

So what options do I have currently to pick from:

1) last available Business level TSI 180hp in their store, but I wanted to go for the next level ( Edition ) and the colour is ‘bleh’  (~26,000EUR)

2) TDI 190hp automatic 4x4 (Edition level), but I have my concerns for the diesel engine (~ 28,000EUR). However it is good this one is 4x4 for almost the same price as the TSI above which lacks it.

3) TSI 272hp automatic 4x4, which is pretty good, but price is also higher . Also 272hp might be too much I believe. (~31,000EUR)

4) just wait for the new engine and the facelift , but that might mean I miss the promos right now and I doubt I will get a price close to 26,000 EUR for the 2.0 TSI

Thanks guys! I will keep an eye on the thread and your suggestions.

Don't ignore the 150hp smaller petrol it's a great engine. If the larger tsi is currently 180hp then I think in your country that must be the 1.8 (not available in the UK in a Superb). In the UK the 1.8 180hp is available in the Seat Leon but only has the same torque figures as the smaller 150hp. In real life the 150hp feels reasonably lively and real life economy will be good.

If you wanted to go for a bigger engine though the TSI 272hp automatic 4x4 would be my suggestion  but it will have a bit more of a drink habit

Sounds reasonable to me, but still you'd better have additional 30hp than lack them.

You're correct. It is 1.8 TSI 180hp, which with the new facelift is gonna be replaced by 2.0 TSI 190 hp.

The 1.4 TSI 150hp should be replaced with 1.5 TSI 150hp this September.

I see you have the 1.4 TSI. How does it feel when overtaking? Do you have the neccesary power and fast acceleration ?

How about if the car is fully loaded - 4 passengers and their luggage ?

Due to the above I decided to go for the bigger engine, cause you never know when you gonna need those additional horses.

But I really don't wanna wait until January. :/

Welcome.

Which country are you in?

Best go drive what the dealers are offering now if that is where the bargains are.

150ps is 150ps is the same no matter what vehicles it is, they can be heavier or lighter, and a diesel will have more torque than a petrol

but not always just where you want it.

I only have the previous gen (EA111) 1.4tsi with 125ps and almost all of the time it has ample power- (Remeber the EA211 1.4tsi 150 has more power and torque).

It's different to drive compared to my previous MK I Superb 1.9pd but still pulls reasonably from 1500rpm  (the pd pulled a bit more at this point)  - however as the revs build the power picks up keeps pulling up to 6000+rpm. This means it's great at overtaking especially once the revs are over 3000rpm - for a big bus it's quite a bit of fun bumbling down country roads.

Once when I was fully laden with 4 adults (3  over 6ft 4") and stuffed with heavy luggage and wine driving in the South of France I found going up some of the motorway inclines you were best dropping down from 6th gear - however consider 6th gear is a major overdrive really, if you could do 6000rpm in 6th you'd be doing nearly 180 mph !

Overall - next time I think it'll be the 1.4/1.5 tsi engine in either a Superb or a Karoq. Actually I had a courtesy Kodiac with the diesel 2.0 and I discovered I'd forgotten how to drive a diesel having to change gear quickly as it was game over well below 4000rpm.

  • 2 weeks later...

I was deciding between 220 and 280 (so now this will be 190 vs 272) two months ago. I finally decided to place the order for 272 as it's a night and day difference. They're not comparable at all therefore it's a matter of what you can afford and if low mpg scares you. If yes, then go for  TDI 190.

If not, 272 is your answer.

Forget about 150 really, it drives like a cow.

The 272 ps won't be too much power for a Superb, combined with the DSG & AWD it's a nice choice, but it might be too expensive to buy & run.

Given your low mileage & short trips commutes it makes much more sense than a diesel, especially since that version of the 2.0 TSi reaches operating temperature quite quickly.

We have just sold a 2014 TDi 4x4 Yeti (older 170 engine) which only did around 7 - 8 miles going to and then from work, after 40K miles the only ‘issues’ we had was one duff glow plug (so I changed all 4), this is also on fairly hilly terrain, no DPF problems other than the usual regens (check if the TSi will have a GPF fitted... new technology to Škoda so they may have some teething problems)

Drive them both and see which one you prefer, the TDi obviously has oodles of low down power, the TSi requires you to stretch it’s legs a bit to get the same power.

It’s mostly personal preference, for me I prefer the way the TDi drives.

Skoda won’t have problems because new 2.0 is Audi engine.

Besides gpf is much less problematic due to petrol being cleaner and nature of solution (filter cleaning each time you release gas pedal)
