Engine performance Kodiaq 1.5TSI DSG compared to Superb 1.8TSI DSG

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have read some of the posts about the performance of the Kodiaq engines and the differing views about “Is the 1.5/1.4 DSG TSI good enough or should I get the 2.0TSI?” and I understand that it “depends on me”.

My question is more specific. I currently have a 5 year old 1.8TSI DSG Superb and I like it a lot especially that from my perspective it has some “oomph” to it. Does anyone have any thoughts on how that “oomph” compares with the Kodiaq 1.4TSI (or now 1.5TSI) DSG and the 2.0TSI DSG. Specifically, does the 1.5TSI DSG have the same “oomph” as my Superb? Or do I need to get the 2.0TSI to get the same “oomph”.

I am thinking of getting the Edition or the Laurin and Klement and I know that to get the 2.0TSI DSG I would also need to get 4x4 which I would otherwise not get.

I have asked to do test drives but the dealers near me do not have either the 1.4/1.5 or the 2.0 TSI DSG.

I found the 1.4 to be adequate but certainly not having what I would call 'oomph'. The 2.0 was a lot more gutsy with a wide power band. I carry big loads and do a fair amount of KM a year, so I did however go with the 190PS diesel. I would recommend test driving a Tiguan Allspace if there are no TSI Kodiaqs available.

I came from a Yeti 1.8 Tsi to the 2.0 Tsi DSG Kodiaq. I had the intention of looking at the 1.4 as I though 150 hp isn’t far away from the Yetis 160, but the dealers demonstrator was the 2.0L 180 DSG. Had never driven a DSG before but after test drive, so impressed, I ordered the 2.0. As such I’ve no experience of the 1.4 but most on here applaud its credentials, all I can say I’m well happy with the 2.0.

I would check other dealers, there are plenty of petrol Kodiaq’s around on forecourts.

If you want 'oomph' then the 1.4 TSI 150PS or the new 1.5 TSI 150PS isn't the best choice. Go for the 2.0 TSI 180PS if you want petrol.

I have the 1.4 TSI and it does everything I need of it very well indeed. It moves the hefty Kodiaq around with ease, bearing in mind it's the wife's family chariot through the week and the family car on the weekend. With the kids onboard our progress can be classed as 'sedate', which suits the Kodiaq well in my opinion.

In gear acceleration at motorway speeds is lacking however, and mine can bog down on some steeper inclines, with down changes not helping much.

Put simply, it lacks torque. Once up to speed all is great, until you need a sudden burst...

1.4 TSI 150PS - 250Nm

2.0 TSI 180PS - 320Nm

2.0 TDI 150PS - 340Nm

2.0 TDI 190PS - 400Nm

If it was my everyday car I'd need more power.

I don't regret opting for the 1.4 TSI, it does everything we need of it. Given the choice again I'd still choose it.

You really need to drive one and decide if it meets your expectations.

This, especially with a full load. With just one up, however, it can be surprisingly sprightly.

Having said that, it has just coped very well with all the ups and downs of the A75 through the Massif Central whilst fully loaded.

As you said, as long as you’re happy for a sedate and relaxing journey, it is perfect.

If you want "oomph" then you probably need more than the 1.4TSI.

Personally I prefer the "sedate" style of driving which, I agree, does suit the Kodiaq well.

The 1.4TSI Manual copes well with 5 up on motorways; cruises at 70 with adequate in gear acceleration for a "sedate" driver.

True, you do need to use the gears on uphills, but the same was true of my old Superb 1.6TDI Greenline.

Correct me if I am wrong but the Superb (mk2?) 1.8tsi torque was 250nm the same as the 1.5tsi torque in the lower revs but had more in the higher revs so had 132kw as against the 1.5tsi 110kw.

The difference will be felt above 4k rpm so mainly in 1st and 2nd gears as 3rd gear above 4k rpm is getting into illegal speeds in uk?

I am presuming the Superb mk2 and later Kodiaq would be of similar weight.

Hi Chris,

I had the same choice to make earlier this summer and I found that coming from the 1.8TSI DSG the 1.4 seemed a bit under powered. My choice was the 2.0TSI DSG and I do not regret it BUT the average long time fuel consumption went from 8 L/100 km's in the Superb to 9-10 L/100 km's, don't know what the smaller engine would have given me. The "Omph" is there though ... ;-)

Have a nice day,

Anders

Some 1.4tsi superb owners with fuelly returns in their signatures indicate averages of around 45mpg or 6.3L/100.

The 1.4 Superb is surprisingly light for such a big vehicle so I think performs better than most expect.
