i'm a newbie on here, but have been more than casual observer of the numerous threads on here, the Briskoda community have provided invaluable understanding of the possibilities and foibles of the mk2 octy, so effectively I've been abit of parasite really, well actually a complete parasite.

I'm running a smog monster, so would wish to keep the responses to my questions within this fermement.

car is a 1.6tdi (ea189) DIESEL, i recently lost injector no.1, so had to fork out for a new injector at a certified skoda service centre, £900 sov's!!,  they convinced me (and my bank balance) to have the "ea189 patch", as this covers all the other egr kit / injector's, for 2 years.

My question is,

Has anyone had issues, post patch, with any performance modifications to this engine, as I have a larger turbo (GTC1549vz), s3 intercooler, to go on.

I've seen people's on this forum quoting circa 180-200bhp and 430-440Nm with the same engine, but all this seems to be prior to the new MOT reg's, so deletion of existant, pollution reduction equipment is a definite no-go, for a road legal daily driver.

if this has been covered before, i haven't been able to find the thread, i apologise, as most performance threads only seem to cater to the "vrs crowd".

Do you want VW Group / Skoda to honour the 24 month Trust Building Guarantee that they have given you but with you modifying the car from Factory Spec in the 24 month period?

You can't have your cake and eat it.

 

Either take the 24 month warranty on the remaining injectors and leave the car as standard, or risk the warranty and modify to your hearts content.

 

As for the effects of the EA189 fix on your potential upgrades, there's only one way to find out.

 

I resisted the EA189 fix as at the time there was little to be gained, only lots to lose. However after my EGR began to play-up I got the fix done to get it replaced under warranty, fully planing to remove the fix afterwards. The car drives no different to before, and if anything MPG has improved. No performance reduction, no difference in the way the car drives etc. so I've left the fix in place.

With a 1.6TDI CR remember as well as the New Engine Management there is the 'Flow Device' shoved up the air intake.

So you want the Roll Back, and maybe the Remap and a new Air Intake / Induction as well as the new Turbo & Intercooler.

many moons ago, before the "whole dieselgate hoo-hah" , i fitted a j1 Automotive induction kit, which meant the flow straightener was redundant. and the service centre didn't bat an eyelash when they did the patch.

 

the 2 year warranty covers as I'm sure you know, the following-

lamda probe
temperature sensor
EGR changeover valve
exhaust gas recirculation valve
pressure differential sensor
high pressure pump
fuel rail
pressure control valve
pressure sensor
high pressure pipelines
 

none of the above is impacted, to my mind (i'm prepared to be proved wrong), by the addition of an uprated intercooler or slightly bigger turbo, the ea189 fix applied to Octy's and others much higher up the foodchain. 

 

the intercooler, if any thing should lower charge temperatures, as high air temperatures cause charge density to suffer increasing combustion temperatures and exhaust emissions. by getting a cleaner burn surely less soot is then recirculated by the egr, gumming up valves and dpf's, so less regen's and stresses on the egr cooler.

 

there's also the blowback from the pistons, which is vented back from the crankcase into the intake manifold which again causes poor combustion increasing emissions. so would want to put on a oil catch can, something like a provent. again this will mess with the whole idea of keeping the car stock,  

 

i concur with Silver1011, as i put the patch off as long as possible (maybe a later iteration of software?), as the car feels no different.

the stock injector's are good for circa.180bhp, and messing with those gets very expensive, but offer huge gains which would make be fear for my bottom end (the car's not mine:-)

 

however i hate cake, and as all the mods apart from the catch can, are genuine VAG parts, the stock turbo on the 1.6 tdi is cast directly onto the exhaust manifold as is the larger one i intend to fit  with the correct oval manifold ports and the s3 intercooler is pretty much plug and play across the PQ35 platform, surely these are mitigating against failure of many of the components covered by the warranty, injectors accepted.

 

guess the answer as Silver1011 suggests, is suck it and see and find a friendly VAG specialist.

I too wondered if the fix has undergone iterations, since the early release. I really cannot tell any difference and after driving a previous car with a misbehaving turbo, DPF and incorrect timing I've become hypersensitive to small changes in a cars driving dynamics.

 

I was all set to get the fix removed immediately after the EGR was replaced, I'd even enquired with Shark Performance getting prices and available slots. As it happens £120 saved and a 2 year warranty on several other expensive bits!

 

I won't be quite so critical of the EA189 fix, at least on the CFFB engine.

From screenshots of vag dpf from a few people running the same model cars there do appear to have been different iterations of the ea189 fix. My significant other has a 1.6 TDI cr rapid which had the fix before buying it, and it's been totally fine. It's the 90bhp version and it's tempting to get a remap for a bit more oomph.

with some of the "horror stories" experienced by early adopters of the fix, i was truly deeply concerned.

but when my no.1 injector went earlier this year, at £900 to fix, i was completely hamstrung and had to go with it, considering the 2 year warranty on the injectors.

had no problems post patch and sincerely hope your significant other doesn't either

regards mapping, abit more oomph is always nice, especially on a car as light as the Rapid.

Guess it's down to interpretation of the Trust Building Measure, which is full of guff, so i've only included the relevant bit, regarding my initial question.

blah, blah......and finally..

 

5. What are the conditions for the Trust Building Measure?
In addition to the conditions outlined above:
(1) The Trust Building Measure
- can only be made to, assessed by and used with an authorised dealer,
- applies to complaints only in materials used and work performed on the following components of the EGR, fuel injection system and emissions after treatment system: lambda probe, temperature sensor, EGR changeover valve, EGR valve, EGR pressure differential sensor, injector, high pressure pump, fuel rail, pressure control valve, pressure sensor, high pressure pipelines,
- does not cover replacement vehicles, out of pocket expenses, damages etc.
(2) provided that
- the affected EA 189 vehicle has participated in the service action 23Q7
- the vehicle has been correctly serviced in accordance with the service schedules, updates and recalls as required by Audi
(3) and provided that none of the following cases apply:
- cases of natural wearing, ie impairment of vehicle by wear and tear,
- the owner or a non authorised service partner or dealer has not orderly repaired, serviced or cared the vehicle (e.g. by using non genuine parts etc.),
- instructions for operation, treatment and care of the vehicle as e.g. outlined in the instruction manual have not been met,
- vehicle has been damaged by third party instances or external conditions such as accident, thunderstorm / hail, flood etc. which has caused the issue complained of,
- any complaint regarding the particulate filter which is due to ash load,
- parts have been built into the vehicle or the vehicle has been changed in an unauthorised way, e.g. through (chip) tuning,
- vehicle has been operated improperly, eg for motorsport competitions or in case of overload,
- vehicle holder has not notified a complaint within a reasonable time frame,
- vehicle holder has not given Audi the opportunity to deal with the issue within a reasonable time frame.
   

now as i read it,  

- the replacement injector and ea189 fix were installed and certified by an authorised VAG service centre, should cover 1 and 2.

- as for the other bits in 3, acts of a higher being, pestilence, zombie apocalypse, well like that's going to happen!!

- if i'm tardy on servicing or telling VAG it's gone fubar, then more fool me,

the bits in bold are what i'm hoping is my get out of jail card;- 

- i'm intending to fit genuine VAG parts, from higher spec VAG vehicles, also afflicted with the ea189 issue, apart from the s3 intercooler granted.

and here's the kicker, therefore if installed by an authorised VAG garage, with the above VAG parts, using the authorised VAG installation procedure and ancillaries / parts, surely that covers it?

 

Seriously, i'm really not (this forum has been invaluable in gaining knowledge) telling anyone to suck eggs, but some of the larger capacity tdi (ea189) owners on this very forum have done modifications way beyond anything i'm remotely contemplating, if there track cars, then kudos to them for trying something different, but daily drivers mean getting a mot. I will be retaining all the existing emission reduction equipment, just wish to have a little fun while doing it.

 

If i'm being stupid, please do not hesitate to let me know, been wrong in the past and will no doubt in the future, just value your opinions as typically served well in the past.
