Static Electricity

Featured Replies

I have just got (28/02/2006)my replacement new car (one with aircon) & I am getting a lot of static when I get out. Most of my previous cars have zapped me but usually on hot dry days. But now the only time I DON'T get zapped is when the road is wet, all other times, even when just backing the car out of the garage, gets me. So has anyone any ideas?

Now you mention it I had this on my Fabia a lot (I seem to get shocks off everything!). I resorted to making sure I closed the doors using the plastic-covered door handles and avoiding touching metal. Maybe a trip to Seat Surgeons and getting a leather interior would help?

Get some new shoes (for your feet). The static could be coming from you and not the car.

I tend to get static shocks off everything, to the extent that the PC at my last place had to be connected to earth in several places and they called me "Magneto Man".

Funniest part is when I give SWMBO a shock to the end of her nose just before a kiss ;)

However, I've never had a shock relating to the Skoda, yet I did from my Astra

Ground yourself before moving to get out of the car, ie hold onto the painted top edge of the door as you get out of the car. Any static is conducted away through the bodywork without building up in you.

I get this, and take this action for every motor I get out of.

Buy a plastic car. Smart or TVR should do nicely.

EDIT: You should be able to find a Relaint cheaply enough ;)

They still have to be grounded.

Most common cause is your trouser material conflicting with the seat cover.

Get my SWMBO to get out first usually so she discharges the car :D

Carry a watering can to pour onto the tyres before leaving the car? :)

Wear all rubber clothing, everywhere. :D

God, did I just say that ? :o

Hi

The static is most likely caused by fabric rubbing. Fleece is just great for creating static. Damp air earths away the charge. Cold sunny days are very dry and aircon makes the air drier still, so wont help with static build up.

My nylon snap-on seat covers are awesome at generating static, get some cracking shocks sometimes.

Yep get a lot of Static especially when wearing my woolie jumper this time of year, suppose I'll have to start wearing the rubber grundies again ;)

I suffer really badly with static in my fabia, sometimes quite painful too.

It doesnt matter what shoes im wearing either.....

Furby Lass - perhaps you should drive naked?

used 2 get zapped with my leon [ bummer] also used 2 get wee spark when putin key in 2 garage lock.

I used to get it from the garage door at my parents house.

youll find u get a shock depending wot your shoes are made from. your shoes dont cause the static but the cause the shock. most people find they get a shock when wearing the same shoes, change shoes no shock.
