SE or SE L?

Featured Replies

Hi all. First time posting in this section.

I only recently bought an Octavia, but my circumstances have changed pretty quickly and I'm now looking at moving up to a Kodiaq. Some great discounts to be found on Carwow, but I wanted to ask for people's thoughts on trim level.

I'm torn between SE with nav and front sensors added as options, or SE L (both 2.0 tdi DSG). The price difference is 2 grand - 24,600 and 26,600.

Any thoughts on whether its worth the extra 2 grand, when I'd have nav (amundsen rather than columbus) and front sensors added to the SE?

Cheers.

I would say are the extras on the SEL worth it to you? Would you like the electric opening boot, alcantara heated  front seats, Wi-fi hotspot onboard, full LED lights and the KESSY full system to name a small selection of the extras above the SE. We weren’t too bothered until the show room SE we saw had Alcantara seats as an upgrade which my better half loved over the cloth seats and other options like Columbus upgrade etc... then when we test drove another SE they had in which was stock, with cloth seats etc which was a nice drive but didn’t feel quite as special inside as the showroom model with its SEL standard upgrades. So we went for the SEL which we haven’t regretted as it comes with tons of styling extras as well as all the practical options.

How are you going to pay for it? If you’re looking at a PCP then due to the higher residual on the SE L and not having to add (as many) extras to it, you may find that the cost/month difference is less than you think. Looking at list price is only relevant if you’re paying cash (and that includes taking the PCP then paying it off immediately).

Thanks both.

I'd be taking PCP then paying it off immediately. I've actually since had another carwow offer of £25,200. So it's now only 600 more to step up to SE L, but the SE L would be with the standard Energy Blue paint while the SE with Quartz Grey option plus front parking sensors (as well as Amundsen Nav).

The price difference spread over the period you are keeping the car will be minimal per month. (Even if buying outright - you can still make the calculation over the time you are expecting to keep it)

If you can stretch to it, get the SE L with the quartz grey , I think we all spend far too long in our cars (well I do anyway!) to regret no getting the model up.

I had a similar decision with the SEL and the Edition, and am glad I chose the Edition.

Thanks chaps. Yes, I am swinging towards the SE L. For the sake of a tenner a month or so, it's probably worth it. Not sure I can stretch to upgrading the colour, but I'm a salesman's dream and they'll probably persuade me! I'll just schedule an extra meeting each month and let my mileage allowance cover the difference :D

Also been thinking about the Peugeot 3008/5008 and the Renault Koleos. But French cars etc.

I'd love to get Edition spec, but it's a bridge too far.

If you've ever had a car with xenon, bi-xenon or LED dipped headlights, to go back to halogen (as per the SE) is like going back to the dark ages (excuse the pun). The LED DRL's (Daytime Running Lights), LED indicators, cornering, speed and rain functions and the addition of the LED foglights also make the car look so much better from the outside (depends if that bothers you much).

£595 for metallic is chunk of extra cash, but if the car's a keeper you'll regret not getting the colour you really want.

You're already spending the best part of £26K, taking it to a smidge over £27K (£600 to upgrade from SE to SE L plus £595 for the paint) isn't going to make too much difference.

You're all correct about the minimal additional cost being worth it. Not to mention that in 5 years time when I change car an SE L will be worth a little more anyway.

Certainly top of the list, but if I get told it's a 6 month wait then I might be impatient and go back to look at a 5008 :/

Question for those who have gone through Carwow - once they have given you their offer (and I have had some great ones, 6 grand off list), is there still any room for negotiation or is that it?

I did mine through car wow. Completely depends on tbe dealership and salesperson you go to. You can play them more off against one another usually though. I got my local dealership to match the discount percentages of other offers which saved a few pennies. Down from £39980.00 (to avoid that pesky VED) down to around £32500.00 which also included finance contribution and test drive deal.

Plus if they are really desperate to shake your hand see what dealer extras you can get them to throw in. I got some free labour from them to switch me over to a set of black trigalavs from the silvers and a few other little extras but that was it.

Also if you do through carwow and dealer confirms you bought through carwow you should get a free £50 amazon voucher

Take the best offer from carwow, and then tell your favourite dealer that if they can beat it (not match it), then you'll order the car.

Cheers Abaday. Luckily enough for me (maybe) my local dealer is the one with the 19% discount. Although I just rang up to confirm I'm coming to look at a Kodiaq and they told me they don't have any, just the manager's Scout and he's on holiday!

Can always do a test drive at a different dealership :)

£25,800 plus £595 = £26,395 for a brand new 2.0 TDI DSG SE L?

The cheapest used Peugeot 5008 on Autotrader is £24,000...

Once you've driven both I'm pretty sure you'll pay the extra £2K for a factory fresh Kodiaq.

The 5008 looks more like an MPV than an SUV too so loses some of it's (already limited) appeal.

£25,877 is the offer I've got for a Kodiaq SE L in Quartz Grey. Equivalent spec in a new 5008 is the best part of 27 grand.

Has to be the SE L, once you get it you will find the extra's it has in comparison to the SE are a complete necessity going forwards. Myself, and a couple of the other guys on here had to pay that little extra and get the Scout but that's just a personal decision, i would however say that the SE L is a logical choice and is backed up by most of the car reviews too.

Do any of you drive, or have you driven, the 1.4 tsi? How does it drive?

Re The Manager's Scout,  & he is on Holiday.

That will be Skoda's / VW's Scout or the Dealerships and it will be getting sold like all the other Demonstrators / Management cars.

?

Is he away on holiday with it getting the 3,000 miles run up, or is it sitting someplace waiting him returning while potential customers are deprived of the chance to drive it?

The HMRC in the UK are just so good to Car Dealerships.

Don't be put off by the thread title, there is some good discussion on the pro's and con's of the 1.4 TSI in this thread...

The 1.4 TSI 150PS is a great way to shave a few thousand pounds off a potential diesel Kodiaq purchase. I actively pursued the 1.4 TSI as when I test drove it up until that point I'd never driven such a smooth and quiet car.

Unless you accelerate hard and fast regularly, tow a caravan or cover more than 20,000 miles a year I'd seriously consider a petrol.

Note, production of the 1.4 TSI has ended, it's being replaced by the 1.5 TSI.

Thanks for that. I do between 18-20k miles a year so was presuming diesel was my best bet due to economy. My weekly driving tends to be 7 or 8 short hops during the week, a 100 mile round trip and a 200 mile round trip. A bit of a mixed bag really.

The 1.4 TSI / 1.5 TSI will be perfect for the short hops and occasional motorway jaunt.

If I was doing close to 20,000 miles a year I might be inclined to go for the diesel, not for economy reasons, but for the extra torque.

My 1.4 TSI can feel a little sluggish during in-gear acceleration, especially at motorway speeds. Everywhere else the 1.4 TSI is the obvious choice for most.

35-40mpg is achievable with the 1.4 TSI in the Kodiaq (probably a little more in the new 1.5 TSI), compared to 45-50mpg with the 2.0 TDI 150PS. You should work out many miles it would take to offset the higher purchase price of the diesel engined Kodiaq plus the higher cost of diesel fuel at the pumps. I suspect it might take several years?

I certainly have a bit of maths to do. Thanks for all of your thoughts.

To throw a spanner in the works, I did pop into a local Peugeot garage after I couldn't get to see a Kodiaq. The 5008 is very nice and very spacious. Haven't driven one though.

But Peugeot are following the trend of hiding all the buttons in the screen.

I wouldn't fancy trying to tweak my temps on the motorway or twisties.

A deal breaker for me.
