X type jaguar

Featured Replies

I know little about the engines and only that they are a mondeo based car.

Just realised I could have a second hand one on my drive for less than a second hand skoda octavia.

So,depreciation on one side are they pants or actually an overlooked bargain?Just wondering:) (slate grey or black;) )

Guy I work with has just bought a brand new one!

Not a good idea, depreciation is fierce initially.

Bigger engines better

Handling from Mk3 Mondeo, well kitted out and lovely engines :D 4wd is also available too I think.

My office mate was seriously looking at buying one and drove it and loved it. I think the sales man suggested he also have a look at the S-type (more expensive!) to see if he'd prefer that......

I'd have one 2nd hand if they did a hatchback

Chris

no no no for the love of all the that is good and holy dont buy an X-type tyrust me on this especially if it more than two years old............... apart from them now being about as much as a used hanky things start to go very wrong gearbox's especially auto's transfer boxs in 2.5 and 3.0 litres ABS rings on the rear halfshafts

and that they are supposed rto be canning the model very very soon trying to take the compasny to a more prestige market again

from your friendly jaguar technician :D

My previous car was an 03 plate X-Type 2.0D Sport. Lovely car, performed well, was economical, loved the retro looks and interior etc.....

They make more sense second hand, as has been pointed out, and the 2.5 and 3.0L V6 petrol engines are lovely and smooth as well as being 4 wheel drive. I'd avoid the 2.1L V6 (front wheel drive only) as it is no quicker than the 2.0D (also front wheel drive), but 10x more thirsty.

Don't go for the base model go for the Sport (colour coded and small spoiler on the boot, plus sports seats, sports suspension etc...) or the SE (Chrome every where) as they hold their value a little better than the Classic.

I know they are not to everyones' taste but after a 3-Series BMW I loved the feel of the Jag, bags more character plus very good dealer service. I was sad to see mine go and still miss it sometimes :(

The estate versions now reasonably priced 2nd hand if you need more practicality

the diesels are much better than the petrols and the later cars have got rid of much

of the problems of earlier cars there are just a few issuses that we see mis fuelling is the biggest and worst cost wise...........

It does have alot of street presence and some great engines make it a great motorway eater BUT I have always had the impression (rightly so I think) they are horribly expensive to maintain...

I can't imagine you'll pick your car up after a service and think "hmmm , that was cheap"

£220-£250 to get the Diesel I had serviced at the Main Dealers (Every 12k miles).

Edit: Road Tax was £115 per year, Insurance Group 13 and 48-50 mpg so overall running costs not as expensive as you may think

Only expensive if you get your parts from Jaguar themselves, we've got 2 X-Type's on the fleet, a 2.0 V6 petrol (think it's 2.0) and a 2.2 Diesel Sport

The Diesel Sport is by far the better car, its pretty quick and looks stunning with the bodykit and 18" wheels on, consumable parts (much to the Jaguar dealers disgust) are interchangeble with mondeo parts! so brake discs and pads etc are pretty cheap, same goes with most engine and transmission parts too.

Both have been faultlessly reliable other than the petrol one popping of a hose once, which was quickly rectified by jaguar recovery.

Maybe the older ones were expensive...?

I stand by prejudices!!!

Thats actually not too bad at all and very similar to what a lot of Ford dealers would charge for a mondeo

Although they typically just pass it on to RapidFit so you might as well take it straight there.

That was the reaction I got all of the time. People would see the badge and start making comments about running costs, servicing etc..... It was a reasonable car to run, depreciation aside..... far cheaper than a 320d or 318i

It would normaly be followed up with the "well of course its only a Mondeo" comment, but when I simply replied "What would you rather have on the drive if you had the choice" the topic of coversation would more often than not change.

I'd recommend the 2.0D to anyone looking for a 2-3 year old decent spec saloon.... a lot of badge for the money !!!

Bit of a thread hi-jack, sorry :o

My Dad's just bought an X-Type 3.0 SE saloon, he's very pleased with it. Fingers crossed none of the problems you mention will come up :)

Can you give me some info on what CD changers are compatible with the standard cassette headunit, it's the only option that it's missing. Where's the default fitting place for them etc...

Cheers,

Steve

the standard placement is in the boot on the left hand side if you have any other accesoreis fitted eg sat nav voice or phone then the modules will be there along with the required carpet otherwise you will need a new carpet side panel.

As for other autochanger fitment as far as i am aware you cant fit another autochanger due to the audio system running on a fibre optic network D2B which requires special leads

hope this helps

Thanks mate, appreciated

Hmmm , a 12 month old one might be a decent choice for my next car :rubchin:

My boss had one for 4 years. He liked it initially but was glad to get shot of it because of 2 problems Jaguar could never cure for him.

It was a manual car but if he tried to take off quickly it would hesitate. Something to do with the traction control I think.

If he tried to move off with the steering locked to thr right or left, the engine would stall. The power steering pump seemed to kill the engine unless he really revved it to compensate.

the car was a right royal pain in the ars*

Yup - sounds like the best of both worlds to me - the prestige of the Jag, and the cheapness of Mondeo parts :D

Gotta be better than a lemon Skoda, anyway
