Rear brake disc and pad change

Featured Replies

Are there any special tools required to do rear discs and pads on a 2016 Scout - It looks like the caliper carrier will need to be removed to get the disc off (on some cars like my old Audi I know the rear discs can be removed without removing the carrier) - what tool/s do i need to do this?

Thanks

a couple of spanners and the correct torque head, a piston rewind tool as well can make it easier if its sticky but not always needed.

AAh ok - i thought something else needed removing to get to the bolts for the caliper carrier.

Ive got a rewind tool with various accessories/bits and should have the rest covered.

Cheers

pretty sure the bolts are a torque head could be wrong though, you need a 13 or 14 C spanner and the torque head to remove the two long bolts

Do able on a drive or is it a ramp job?

On the mk2 the caliper bolts were so stuck that a jack didn’t give enough room. Hopefully not on the mk3

i always change mine on the drive, just dont rely on your jack alone, put an axle stand under it.

jack/stand, I found that the leverage required was large and I required a long bar. Too long to do at the rear.

will have a look at this one.

i have a 3 foot breaker bar and a torque wrench to do them up correctly again.

And you should have a wire brush to clean any rust and the bearing. Clean it thoroughly and don't put grease after you clean it, just the disk.

Is a torque bit something like a torx bit?.…...................

Lol

Tools required:

13mm and 17mm spanner’s to remove the calliper/piston.

M14 spline drive for carrier - on very tight! Need at least 2’ breaking bar to force off, and not much room around spring/lower suspension arm, but doable with a jack.

T27 or T30 (I think latter) torx for the rear disc. Blow torch to heat up the rear disk and rubber mallet required prise away from the hub.

Wire brush to remove all of the corrosion.
