So... I took out a 2 year lease that was going really cheap for the 1.4 TSI SE Sport and it's been nothing short of amazing.

Unfortunately it has to go back in December and combined with the fact I broke my left foot, I had to find an automatic.

After looking at a load of second hand cheap automatics, including a beautiful A6 3.2 V6, that lit Vagcom up like a Christmas tree, I found that the deal I took out originally is back on again.

Now, foot aside, the only driving I do is to the shops etc. I normally cycle to work etc and the wife has a car. My car is essentially for me to enjoy (sounds protensious doesn't it) when I want to.

The deal is offering the SE Tech trim at £90-£110 a month with a decent intial payment but struggling whether to get the 1.0 or 1.5tsi with DSG.

The 1.4 TSI is great, quiet and I am struggling to see why I would go down the 1.0 route but the wife has a 0.9 TCE in her Dacia that puts the Octavia to shame around town etc.

Anyone got the SE Tech trim? What's it like?

I think I'm going to miss the seats in my SE Sport but going to enjoy the ACC and improved infotainment system.

Thoughts?

Cheers

You can't get SE Tech with DSG and 1.5...

My dealer suggested otherwise but confirming tomorrow.

That was with specifically requesting the SE Tech so never know ;)

I went from a 0.9tce in a Clio to the 1.4tsi in an Octavia. Thought the 0.9tce was great considering it's meagre size ( people wouldn't believe it was only 900cc under the bonnet) but I'd never have said it puts a 1.4tsi to shame around town. I'm assuming you're talking about the 148bhp 1.4?

I test drove the 1.0tsi in a SEAT Ateca and that was more advanced in every way compared to the french unit. It's something I'd easily recommend but when someone suggests the Renault engine is better around town than the 1.4tsi?   I'm genuinely gobsmaked - in what way is the 0.9tce better around town?

Just generally feels a lot faster/nippier. The Octavia is more refined in ALL ways so it feels smoother and slower. The Dacia is essentially a go-kart.

Good to know the 1.0tsi is good though. If the 1.5 is a no go with DSG then at least the 1.0 will suffice

Well...   depending on model, your 0.9tce takes approx 10.7s to 62mph. Your 1.4tsi Octavia covers it in 7.9s - that's a whopping 3secs faster. The 0.9tce produces 88bhp, the 1.4tsi 147bhp.  In other words the Octavia is going to leave it for dead.

At a guess you may not be using the gearbox to it's best.  IMO VW group has a pretty short 1st gear, hang on to it too long and you loose power. It produces it's max torque of 250Nm from a very low 1500 to 3500rpm. The french unit on the otherhand has a paltry 135Nm max torque in comparison, but that's when the engine spins at 2500rpm. TBH  I'm almost in 2nd gear as soon as the car is moving.

The way you drive, a 0.9tce then may feel more perky, but in all honesty, the 1.4tsi leaves it for dead. The French 3cyl is more vocal which may make it sound faster too. Not an issue if you're going for DSG tho - as long as you select Sport and not ECO :D

Don't get me wrong, it's evident that the 1.4 TSI is faster but the weight, mapping and gearbox ratios are completely different.

I know I can Hoon it and leave the 0.9tce for dust, especially when already rolling but the feeling you get around the doors is completely different.

The 0.9 tce feels like it's purely built to pull away from junctions/roundabouts as quickly as possible and from there.

A 50cc moped can get around quick.  How quick do you need in towns, 0-30, 0-40, 0-50, then stop again.

City cars are generally good in cities, towns and even out of town, that is why there are city cars and people drive them.

Lost me there I'm afraid. What you're describing has nothing to do with the engine, it's the type of car. If you want a small car for buzzing around town, my advice would be to avoid an Octavia.

I got a 1.0 Octavia a year ago to replace a 1.2. We drive about 15,000 miles a year, mainly  7 -8 mile commute, but also a monthly motorway trip of 300 miles or so. I was concerned about the drop in engine size, and was going to get a 1.4 sport, but the deal on the 1.0 was too good to miss with loads of extras fitted and ready to drive away with no wait. Must say, I love the car. Performance is much better than I expected, fuel consumption averages around 50mpg, but on some runs get over 60. I thought that it would suffer on the M62 over the Pennines, but it copes perfectly well up and over the top. Yes, it doesn't have the oomph of a VRS, but for what I need, a good economical workhorse, it does the job very well.

I have just picked up my 1.5 tsi DSG Octi Est. coming from a 2.0 tdi 4x4 Kuga with a powershift gearbox. I am loving the engine it’s quick if needed but will also bumble along around town quietly and effortlessly dropping in to 2 cylinder mode quite often at times of low torque coupled with the 7 speed DSG which is smooth makes it an absolute joy and I’m very pleased with the set up a massive improvement over the Kuga, bit early to tell about mpg at the moment as I have done so few miles in it but early indications are promising

So you're saying a 1.0 in a ferarri body etc would still be a ferarri?

Edit: I mean to say that the experience of driving a Ferrari lol

Hoping the dealer can sort me out with the 1.5 on DSG with the trim the deal that's going. Otherwise I'll be stuck with the 1.0 lol
