Brake pads & rotors all replaced at 23000 miles

Featured Replies

Had the issue with rear brake rotor rust for about a year but lease company wouldn't replace on service earlier this year.

Over the last month or so had vibration during braking.

Garage just replaced all 4 disc rotors and pads all round

Same sort of use as my previous Volvo XC60 but that never had a problem

But that was a Volvo built for Europe & Global sales.  (Doh, so are VW's, Audi, SEAT & Skoda),

My old Volvo could sit for weeks never move discs never have surface rust. My Suzuki sat for months and stayed shiny and worked every time.

Park a VW Group Vehicle, anyone and the next day there can be corrosion. Wash the car and an hour later rust.

They source the cheapest crap there is in brake parts, even the cheapest replacements available can be better than OEM.

They never got to be 2nd Biggest in the world without Euro pinching.

And with VAG discs, the lighter footed you are, the worse the corrosion. Often leading to delamination.

Really terrible oe quality. Or maybe a deliberate policy to save money and keep dealers happy.

Read somewhere that uk market use Lucas parts, elsewhere use Bosch. Not sure its true, they're all made in China anyway.

It did make me think about braking as I generally brake very little, reading the road ahead don't really brake much:shake:

Perhaps I'll get SWMBO to drive it:sweat:

I've got a horrible feeling I'm heading in this direction. Anyone got any idea of the likely cost? I assume you didn't have to pay for this directly and it's a company car?

Skoda fixed price maintenance - discs and pads front or rear £235 (£470 for both front/rear)

Not my experience.

My Leon was fine. had it nearly 4 years with no issues with surface rust on disks.

Superb has been exactly the same. 18 months old and still like new. Fabia (4 months old) seems to be the same.

If you want rust on your discs and pads that weld themselves to the discs within hours of cleaning the car get a Kia. You could see the rust forming whilst you leathered the car off. Leave it standing for more than a day and it was a sod to get moving and when it did there was a very loud bang. But we had it 5 years and never replaced pads or discs, cleaned up fine within a couple of miles.

You park your cars & drive them in a different location from me them, weather, my Alhambra 18 months old and cosmetic rust every day since about the 2nd week i got it.

My Kia was 7 years old with 26,000 miles on it, same disks non rusty.  EDIT, i tell a lie, they were replaced under warranty at 3 years old, as was the rear box, it was blowing out the drain hole.  Same discs from then on.

Just a few hundred miles each year between MOT's before it went.

Like my Suzuki, 300 miles a year for 3 years, discs as non rusty as when fitted about 9 years before @ 7 years old.

I rejected a leased 2009 Hyundai i30 1.6TD auto before a year old, it had new discs and calipers twice, and new alloys just after the first 4 months which was winter. ECO tyres that were dangerous and i was not going to pay for the tyres to make it usable, the brakes were crap and there was no engine braking.

A Caliper did seize on the Volvo but then it did sit around for weeks outside unused.

Brakes were always OK apart from that and the Discs never rusted,.

Probably a "placebo" effect but the car feels better to drive now, seemed as through brakes were dragging before.

Did have heavy rain last night but no evidence of rust of new discs this morning, whereas before they would be rusty after a period of rain.

Perhaps the ones the dealer use are better than factory fit?

At least the bloody thing stops better now:biggrin:

Which dealer replaced your discs/pads?  I just had mine S3 serviced as Allams of Epsom after 27000 miles and they alerted me (over the phone) that the rear discs were corroded and would need replacing possibly before next service/MOT but simply quoted me £350 for the job.  I told them over the phone that there must be an issue with the rear discs as many S3 owners are complaining of excessive wear on the rears but the service guy seemed to know nothing about it.  Do I have a case here?  I have attached pics of both rears and front discs (which are fine).  Definitely fishy that fronts are fine and rears are knackered IMO.  Advice on how to make a warranty claim much appreciated.
