Oil service really required?

A VW Group Fixed Reset in the UK comes up as 9,400 miles / 372 days.   Not seen any show as anything else.  not 9,300 miles.

Maybe others have.

SORRY couldn't resist.:notme:

If we don't know what causes the oil sensor to flag up that it needs an oil change earlier or later then could it be that there is no oil sensor?

What if the ECU simply measures each individual's driving (eg average journey length, position of the throttle, etc) and based on a piece of software works out from how easy or badly the driver looks after the car tells us to change the oil?

Looking at this excerpt that I've taken from another website, maybe we're barking up the wrong tree with it actually being an oil sensor:

With the variable LongLife Service schedule, the Inspection Service intervals are also fixed but the Oil-change Service intervals are variable. Sensors take account of driving style and conditions to determine when the Oil-change Service is required and the driver is informed via the on-board service interval display.

Now I am even more confused!

I thought you had a straightforward choice: fixed servicing where the display will tell you when it is time for an oil change and time for a service. These based purely on a fixed miles or days limit reached.

Or variable where nothing was set at all and the car alerts you when it needs an oil change, and when it needs a service. So, (an extreme example) you could do a nice gentle 50 miles a week and after a few years it would tell you the oil was getting a bit iffy, or that a service was needed as something else was telling it it was wearing out.

But it sounds like "variable" actually has some "fixed" intervals built in to it as well.

The sensors are duff then, they can not tell the difference between me treating my own cars like my most cherished possession always letting the oil get to an efficient operating temperature, only using good oil and fuel, and me flogging cars that are not mine and being handed back to an inch of their lives.

Or maybe that is what is the accepted treatment of them, treat them mean and keep them keen and the engine oil though not clean lasts for ever almost.

One year and a week, allows for the PDI to delivery and possibly a holiday, or so i was always told. Maybe a myth.

Odd that Skoda UK think there are 372 days in a year. Must send them a Calendar for Xmas!

One year and one week.

The PDI does not happen the day the car is collected usually.

Car prepped, customer hand over or delivery, about a year later car back for a Service.

Thank you for enlightening me oh WISE ONE!
