Hi there, ive got a 57plate estate diesel with 129k on the clock, i work away so car is only used at weekends, 

Starting it up last weekend to come home, the gear selectoe display on the dash started flashing wen put into gear, an continued to flash al the way home(roughly 26miles)and did not show wot gear was selected or was in, after getting home, left the car for about half an hour then drove round the block an was fine, but this week was just constantly flashing,

Does any body have any ideas of wot the problem could be?

You need to get the fault codes read as it is indicating a gearbox fault and is running in emergency mode.

My handbook says:

"The gearbox operates in a corresponding emergency programme if there are func- tional faults in the gearbox electronics. This is indicated by all of the segments in the display lighting up or going out. "

 

The lighting up/ going out is because my model with DSG has gear lights rather than your type of display.

I wonder if you have got water in wiring connectors etc as it is not often used. A code reader is your next step.
