Octavia 1.9 Tdi pd engine oil

Featured Replies

I know this is covered but for the life of me I can’t find a new thread.

As I’ve just bought an octavia, I am am going to replace the oil has I’m not sure what’s currently in it.

Now what oil do I use?

505.01 or 507??

5w/40 or 5w/30

Euros has a sale on at the moment so want to take advantage.

Also so new to the whole Skoda thing and so far I’m really enjoying it.

If it doesnt have a DPF then use 505.01

5w/30 if the engine is in good/prime condition and doesn't use oil

Otherwise 5w/40 which is often the better choice anyway.

If it has a DPF (unlikely on 1.9tdi but check) you need to use a low ash oil so also needs ACEA C3

Quantum Platinum is ideal and cheap

Thanks,

I’m just wondering as the 507 is newer is it not a better choice?

I’m just really confused about it.

505.01 was designed specially for 1.9tdi pd engines.

507 didn't exist that was for next gen CR engines

Not all 507 oils are backward compatible with 505.01 which has EP additives to protect the cam lobes operating the unit injectors.

You are wasting money on 507 and taking a risk.

As above go for the 5w/40 (505.01) as it offers better protection and designed for the PD engine as 1.9 does not have a dpf.

Also Asda does cheap vag approved 5w/40 it is about £21 for 5l (comes in Asda own brand gold bottle)

Not sure, but possibly some cars with the last version of the 1.9 PD (BLS code) may have had DPF.

PD and DPF is a bad combination with all sorts of troubles.

Quantum Platinum has all bases covered as far as PD is concerned

Expensive, only 4 litres, Castrol doesn't have a great reputation nowadays. It bought its way into VW as a recommended oil but now has been dropped by VAG.

Quantum oil from vw dealer is only £21.35 for 5 litres delivered to your door. Quantum is owned by VAG and its made by Fuchs who are the official factory fill for VAG .

Also you mentioned 5w/40 is that for foxes service? If I was to use 5w/30 for interval services is that right?

And if if I was to use 5w/30 and change every 12months/10,000 is that better?

No foxes are involved in servicing. :poolparty:

You may see a very small increase in economy with 5/30w on long journeys only, maybe 1 or 2%. But wear may be a bit higher.

PD engines really require fixed interval servicing 1yr/10k, if you want the camshaft to last. Stick to that and provided you bought a good, well looked after example it will run trouble free or at least 200,000+ miles. (Don't forget the cambelt though)

Check oil capacity for your engine, needs more than 4 litres I think.

Haha yeah I meant fixed, I certainly hope there isn’t a fox.

Ok so I’ve one more question,

now 505.01 is a specific pd oil? Therefore it doesn’t necessarily have to state pd on the can of just needs to state 505.01 to be the correct oil is that correct?

Yes, Its the correct oil if it states 505.01 (make sure its not 505.00 though, that's an old spec and very wrong oil)

It also depends if it is on longlife or fixed service schedule?

Longlife service (variable service) VW507.00 5w-30

Fixed service VW505.01 5w-40.

Cheers,

Guy

Afaik 1.9 TDI never had long life/variable regime. Earliest were the 2.0tdi.

Interesting, my data is showing a gq1 or gq2 option for the 1.9tdi going back to 2004. Maybe it wasn't popular in the UK.

I stand corrected.

My 1.9 was new in 09 and came from the factory on variable servicing changed to fixed asap.

Hi xman the Parks Garage selling the Quantum oil is only about 10 minutes away from me by car and it seriously annoys me I can't go in and buy it at this price over the counter...

So order it online and have it delivered to your door. No need to drive anywhere.

It's just annoying as I pass the garage at least 2-3 times a week ... I normally buy litres of oil to 507.00 spec locally for cheaper than this ... My engine only takes 3.8 litres for an oil and filter change.

My 2005 1.9 TDI O2 has a long life interval. ( QG1 is listed on the options list), thus requires 507.00 oil.

Maybe there is a difference between mainland Europe (LHD) and UK models?

My 06 1.9PD 105 also came with the variable servicing option set from new... Until I got it.

I use 505.01 spec oil over distance/time.

Already apologised for my mistake.
