6 speed conversion

Featured Replies

Hi all I'm not after any help just thought I would give out some information on doing a 6 speed conversion as I could not find in 1 place everything I needed to know and after hours of searching and now having done the swap I can now put in 1 place everything that is needed if anyone wanted to do the swap.

I have a 1.8t octavia 2004 that was going through drive shafts and gearboxes and Im only running a shark performance stage 2 map. So everyone said do the swap to the 02m speed and I'm so glad I did!!

So what do u need if u want to swap?

1: gearbox I got a FML from a 1.8t make sure u get the mount added bit.

2: starter motor it has a longer shaft u also need need starter bolts they are 180mm long.

3: drive shafts they are alot bigger then the 5 speed. Make sure u get the earlier shafts as they are the nut type they changed it to bolt later on.

4. Depending of the year of your car u don't need to change the linkage cables but u do need the backet that holds them to the gearbox it's a different shape u also need a bolt that holds the gearbox to the engine for this bracket as it has a thread on the end of it to bolt the plate too.

5. The power steering pipe has a different mounting point I just added 2 nuts to the bolt to move it off the gearbox it didn't need bending.

6. The clutch slave cylinder is different its built into the gearbox I had to bend my pipework to get it to the location but this was easy enough to do.

7. Clutch and flywheel I made the mistake of buy a paddle clutch cheap second hand don't get me wrong they are good but its a hard pedal judders and has an instant bitting point. The flywheel bolts are also different too if your going for a single mass or dual they are different.

8. The gearbox sandwich plate was the same as mine too so didn't need to change that.

9. There is another bolt off the 5 speed that bolts the gearbox to the engine that's to short so thats 2 in total that u need off the donor car I've left the longer bolt out atm as I didn't know about I and haven't got it.

10. 6 speed gearknob

I think that is pretty much it I must say I'm so pleased with the difference the 6 speed is so much better built just looking at it, the drive shafts are bigger and better made I'm not a mechanic and I had it change in 7 hours. I must say it went so well I got my parts off different cars but the easiest way is to use the cupra r I'm sure u need before 2003 driveshafts.

I just wanted to share as much info as possible to help anyone else doing this swap and my advice if u have the 5 speed is think about doing the swap it makes it feel like a better car.

If anyone needs any part numbers let me know I'll try help as best I can

This should be a pinned thread.
