Bad sound when switching fast to R gear

Featured Replies

Helo,

Some month ago i bought a new 2018 octavia 1.5 tsi with manual gearbox.

When i put the car fast in reverse, there’s a bad scratch noice from the gearbox. This happens every time. If i use long time (app 2 sec) between clutching and gearing there are no bad sound.

The dealer tells me this is normal because of the gearbox construction. And tell me to slow down.

I have never experienced this with other cars earlier and find this answer a bit strange.

When i bouth the car there was a similar problem(sound) with the 4 gear. The dealer told me that it was an adjustment error from the fabric and fixed this by adjusting a wire or something?

Does anyone have knowledge or experiense with the same issue?

It's normal. I've driven since the late 1960s and you always need to take your time between being in a forward gear and reverse. Something will break eventually unless you are more patient.

No mechanisms can flip between forward and reverse motion ad lib.

No doubt others will give their opinions.

This also occure from Neutral. Im not very fast when i shift gear, but i have to be very very slow for the sound not to appear. Something seems wrong. Like i said, not experienced this with other cars.

Its more like a scratch sound. It feels like i shift gear without the clutch 100% attached or something?

The dealer said they have talked to skoda who says that this is normal because of the gearbox contruction. Something whit a single clutch plate? I have no idea, but it seems strange to me. I have to be very aware of this otherwise i get this bad sound.

Always remember if the dealers lips are moving........

they are lying

Gears in neutral and clutch released, press the clutch down and select reverse and there is a gentle crunch sound and you can feel the gear engaging through the gear stick. I guess that something is still spinning in the gear box. It happens everytime to me and I am not worried, I have had many cars that make the noise, but it is a crunch, not a scratch.

I agree. Its maybe more like a crunch sound, but not very gently in my opinion. I have to use some ekstra force too, and it feels like im doing something wrong.

But why this delay between clutching and gearing to reverse? This dosnt happen when i change to other gears. And i have never experienced this with other gearboxes. I think its very anoing. I also have to be very aware of this every time i put it in R or else i get this crunchy sound.

Because the shaft between the clutch and the gearbox is still spinning and takes time to stop.

Other gears have synchromesh. I often had to momentarily release the clutch while in neutral before reverse would engage on my Focus.

Ok, thank you for the answere. Then i think i can calm down about it ;-)

I have the same issue. I also experience a very notchy gear change from 1st to 2nd. Took it up to the dealer's to have a check. The mechanic explained that in order to ensure more reliable gearboxes they chose to fit each gear with 2 synchros (if that makes sense) or something like that. Long story short, that is why the shifting is slower and the smooth quick shifts of my Octavia 2 are long gone. But that should apprently improve durability. By the way, never had the reverse clunk/scratch on the O2 and yet I shift the exact same
