Engine vibration at sppeds 60mph plus

Featured Replies

Skoda Superb ELEG TDI CR 140 4X Superb Estate 2.0 Elegance DSG. Vehicle produces vibration at speeds of approximately 60mph and gets worse at 70mph. Prior to the vibration the EGR unit was replaced after developing a problem after the emissions update. Not sure whether this has any bearing, then brake pads were replaced as worn, then replaced again as disc(s) were thought to be warped. However the vibration is still present. The vibration seems to come through the seat, steering column and pedals. At 50mph or below there is no apparent problem at all. Local garage has checked the main engine mounts but nothing appears to be wrong. Any help appreciated.

You haven't mentioned wheel balance checking...?

So, which is it, the engine vibration (as the title suggests), or the car vibration (as it is clarified in the first post)? @Wino is on a good trail, I've experienced something similar on my car while having winter tyres and alloys ... the rear right tyre was deformed, and it made strong vibrations at speeds 50-60 kmh, anything lower would just make the car slightly wobbly while driving, anything higher that that erased the issue (you didn't know there was anything wrong with the wheels)

Wheel balance problems always seem to manifest themselves at 60 - 70 mph.

Get them checked/rebalanced.

Yes, wheels and tyre balancing have been done, no issues. Had another talk with the garage and they explained that beauase there is no issue when increasing revs while stationary that not an engines problem. Suspension is fine, so the issues is possibly with drive shaft or prop shaft though they have manually checked there is no play in the drive shaft(s)  are far as they can tell. For the moment I have asked them to investigate the prop shaft as this was probably removed to allow for the EGR to be replaced.  I will advise if the problem continues once that has been addressed.

I'm not an expert on these matters - my Superb 2.0 TDI Elegance auto is the first Skoda I've ever owned, so am picking up most of my education via Briskoda.

This is the first car I've ever known where all four wheels need to be aligned - could this be the source of the problem?

I've had 8 BMW's in the past and all but two of them needed a 4 wheel alignment at some point. Bad/uneven tyre wear and noise was the usual indicator - vibrations tended to be more suspension bushing wear, wheel balancing or prop shaft (i.e. rear wheel drive setup) related. If you ever changed wheel, tyre sizes or has suspension work done - the alignment was often required.

Rear tyre sawtoothing (swap wheels front-> rear and see if it changes) can cause noise and vibration issues - common on this suspension platform on any VAG car with the same.

Also another similar thread that turned out to be the wheels:-
