4wd 1.8 Turbo rear wheel bearing.

Featured Replies

Hello, I'm new here.

I have had my Octavia for a few weeks and it has given me a few problems to get it on the road.

As with most of my cars I usually buy the worst one available (because I'm an idiot) so got mine with no MOT after having been parked up for 18 months.

So far I have changed both rear calipers as they were seized solid, one rear spring (a bit of a story with incorrect parts along the way) and some drop links.

When I went for the MOT the alternator died so had to borrow a battery to get home from there but luckily I found a suitable replacement on Amazon for only £36.

Now it is nearly there and I have a rear wheel bearing which is noisy. Probably due to the seized caliper and the 170,000 miles it has done!

The part number is the same as for the front bearing.

My question is, I don't have a press am I going to be able to get it changed myself or am I going to have to get help?

Can it be done on the car? If not as I expect have I got to disconnect loads of stuff to get the hub off?

Sorry for the long winded question but thought I should introduce myself as well!

John

In case anyone else has to do this in the future I shall do a very quick write up.

So armed with no replacement part I decided to try and get the rear bearing in a position to be removed.

Up in the air and rear wheel off.

Caliper and disc off I started undoing everything.

This eventually (45 minutes) resulted in this.

So I gently* knocked the hub out but something was missing.

Oh there it is, unfortunately there was no lip to get a puller under so I had to get creative.

Which worked.

Next onto the bearing, into the vice after the circlip was removed.

These were used.

This was the result.

End of play with the bearing for today was this.

I strolled to the shop and collected my bearing.

Some time later it was in and I needed to attend to the other bits needed on the rear arm.

There is a plastic shield that stops the abs sensor connection getting everything thrown at it as expected the screws that hold this on had to be removed by force. I ground off the rest of the screws and drilled and tapped the arms.

Some time later with the help of ratchet straps and spring compressors I was here.

Connecting back up all the bits I had to remove. You can see I spent a little time cleaning up the arm and gave it some paint too.

The last bit needed reconnecting was a brake line support which I had cut through as I wasn't going to bleed the brakes yet again so this got a bit of weld on it.

Then it was test drive time and I had the ABS light on straight away so back up in the air and the connector wasn't fully home and I needed some water pump pliers to actually get it seated properly.
