Simultaneous warning lights for tyre pressure, power steering & traction control

Featured Replies

While nearing the end of a 120-mile journey home today, all of the three above mentioned warning lights came on.  Initially it was just the tyre pressure and traction control lights but after stopping to switch the ignition off and on again, all three came on simultaneously after a few yards and this is the way it's been since.

The power steering is ok until I get down to parking speed when it gets very heavy.  I haven't had the chance to check whether the ABS still functions.

This triangle of lights seems to occur across several manufacturers and is sometimes cured by replacing a faulty ABS sensor and sometimes replacing the whole ABS unit.  I'm obviously hoping it's the former!  Does anyone have experience of this problem in relation to a Fabia?

Mine is a 2011 Greenline diesel estate with 60,000 miles, dealer serviced from new and is due for its next service in ten days.  Do I leave it until service time or get them to look at it now?

For a little more background, although it might just be a coincidence, the car had the water pump kit and cam belt done four weeks ago (£550) and three weeks later the check engine warning light came on and they diagnosed a faulty auxiliary coolant pump.  That cost me £312 including the diagnosis.  Could any of that work have brought on these current warning lights?

Auxiliary   coolant pump? Is that not just the water pump? And if it is, did you not just pay to have it replaced?  It will have a two year warranty from a main dealer!

First though, check the tyre pressures are accurate. Check tyres, including inner sidewalls for damage and/or nails, etc.

If they are damaged or under inflated, get that sorted. Then move on to the power steering pump. You may have to whip out the battery and the battery shelf, to access the power steering reservoir. Clean the lid well, prior to removing the cap so as to prevent crap from falling in. Check the fluid level and if needed, top up with the CORRECT fluid. Don't put any old stuff in. By disconnecting the battery, you may re-set the fault lights so that may be a bonus.

Get back after trying these things.

It's not the water pump, it was the auxiliary coolant pump which is a secondary unit.

Tyres are all perfect and steering fluid level is fine.

It looks like this trio of fault lights is common across several car manufacturers to indicate an ABS fault, either with a sensor or the ABS unit.  If anyone's got experience of this with a Fabia I'd be keen to hear how it was fixed.

No direct experience but I would expect that it is as you say, an ABS wheel speed sensor. Should be fairly easy to check with VCDS or dealer diagnostics. Much less likely to be the actual ABS computer.

Probably the wheel speed info is used to increase the power assistance level of the steering for low speed manoeuvring, and obviously also used by the traction control.

Power steering issue is probably unrelated and is more likely to be your battery voltage is low, basically because the battery is dying (one cell in particular).

Check your tyre pressures and examine tyres for puncture damage, nails etc. When a tyre pressure drops, and the rolling radius drops significantly things like traction control, ESC are disabled.

After checking all tyres are at the correct pressure, reset the tyre pressure monitor using the procedure in the owners manual.

I've had the ABS light and the ESP light come on, flickering and staying on but resetting and perhaps doing it again at later date. Each time it resets, though. VCDS stated rear nearside ABS fault so may be sensor or wiring but not rectified it yet and as mentioned, it comes on now and then. Not had the power steering light come on though.

@011, with that mileage could easily be requiring a new battery, as xman mentioned..

The problem was traced to a faulty steering angle sensor/airbag slip ring which has now been replaced.
