Oil for VRS 230

Featured Replies

I know this has been done before but I can't find a definitive answer, maybe there isn't one!

What is the best oil for a 2018 VRS 230? The manual doesn't help by talking about 504, 502 or 508 but not specifying which one for which engine!

Castrol's website recommends 5W-40 but I've also seen lots of people talking up Quantum Longlife III 5W-30 as being what the dealers use.

I run 5w/30 504.00 oil spec in my 230 Octy RS

VW508 /509 so 0w 20 FS LL is what the cars are coming out the factory with now so that VW could get WLTP test results.

VW504 / 507  so 5w 30 FS LL is what the Petrols & Diesels come out with up to now, so Long Life for Variable Servicing or Fixed Servicing.

Seeing as TSI's can have issues, and Variable / Flexible Servicing is maybe not needed for those doing 10,000 miles or less,

and doing Fixed servicing.

VW 502 00 so 5w 40 FS can be 'Simply Clever'.    Not Long Life Oil but longer living TSI Euro 5 & Euro 6 engines.

Cars that are keepers.

That question made me laugh - how many times on any VW group forum has the words 'can't find a definitive answer' been mentioned?

What Offski says is correct - choose your oil based on service intervals. He misleads though - even if you're on an fixed intervals, using long-life oil works exactly the same. ( contrary to popular myth, long-life oil can sometimes be bought cheaper than std oil).  Long-life simply means it can be used up to 24mth or 18/19/20k miles (depends on what you read - it's that 'definitive answer' thing again!). But there's no issues changing long-life oil every year.

Just remember one thing - take the oil companies or anyone elses advice with a pinch of salt because if anything goes wrong with your car and you're looking for warranty or a contribution from the manufacturer to resolve the issue, they'll want to know the service history. And if you haven't used any of those VW group recommended oils - you're buggered.

Scot5,  you miss the point i think.

Price has nothing to do with it, Long Life oil can be cheaper, Castrol / Quantum is nothing special.

VW Group get billions of litres of the stuff to put in engines and as their recommended oil millions use it.

French Manufascturers recommend Total.

Toyota recommend Toyota or Mobile.

BMW  / Merc recommend what ever.   Brands are not what matters,  Spec is what matters.

VW & German Manufacturers engines have the shortest life expectancy out of Warranty.

Bottom of Reliability lists.  Japaneses engines top of reliability lists.

VW 502 00 is a recommended spec for Fixed Servicing of TSI's so no Warranty issue there.

Yes VW504/507 Long Life oil works the same Vaiable / Flexible Servicing or Fixed.

Up to 20,000 miles, handy, the recommended oil by VW Group, the Engine Builders, the sellers to Fleet etc.

Long Service Intervals.   (VW are not doing much for those with short life TSI's though.  those with early death engines.)

The Elephant in the room.

Euro 4 & Euro 5 TSI engines, the few with issues, the few hundred thousands out of millions.  or more important to owners, maybe the 1 car they own.

so 1.2, 1.4, 1.8 or 2.0 TSI's.   The ones with Timing Chain Tensioner or Timing Chain Issues, the Piston Ring or Srapper ring issues. etc

So maybe the Long Life oil made no difference, and that it is 5w 30 and not 5w 40 made no difference, but some believe that the issues can be the

Long Life oil, and bore wash with fuels and detergents and the Super Unleaded that are also the recommended fuels on some of the more performance based engines.

http://volkswagen.co.uk/need-help/owners/Fuel

So anyone might well be best following the VW Group recommended Long Life oils,  but remember that VW never admit they built some Lemon of Engines.

Lets see how the Euro 6 TSI are doing after 5 years and more from Long Life / Variable / Flexible Servicing and 'Long Life Oil'.

Then lets see how the Euro 6d temp get on with VW508/509  0w 20 FS LL over the next 5 years.

*** ??  Are Main Dealers now putting in VW 508/509 in at Servicing to cars that left the factory with VW508/509,

or still using VW 504/507.   Some will sell you VW 508 /509 @ £17 a litre, but are not using it in the workshop.***

Yes the Euro 6 TSI asked about here in this section are different. Time will tell if any better than what went before.

What never changed is VW Recommended consumables, Oil, Filters, Spark Plugs..  (Castrol / Quantum / NGK)

Thanks all for the replies.

So if I've read the replies, particularly the last one, correctly that I'm servicing every 12 months (inc. oil!) then the 5W-30 (502.0) would be the one to go for then?

Something like the Quantum below:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Longlife-5w-30-Fully-Synthetic-Engine/dp/B01DGYXX50

Any recommendations on the best place to get it for a good price?

^^^ But that is the VW 504/507 so 5w 30 FS Long Life.   Which is what the Dealers will use and VW / Skoda recommend.

Maybe go for VW502 00 so 5w 40 FS if you like your engine, car and want a keeper.   Up to you.

If you want VW502 00 5w 40 FS or VW504 / 507 FS LL,  walk into ASDA, look at their Branded oil, much cheapness, does the job,

some days cheaper than others, they seem to be reducing the price often.

Proper oil from a Oil Manufacturer, meets and even exceeds the spec required what ever you get.

Or COMMA Premiums, or Fuch, or whatever, all proper oil,  get what you want to the correct Spec.

So for a TSI Fixed it can be VW502 or 504 / 507

For Variable must be to VW 504 / 507.

OT,

  TDI's must be VW 507.

My 63 plate vRS 2.0T has been using 5w-30 since day dot & still uses 5w30 even with a remap, just shy of approaching 45,000 miles with service due within the next 2 weeks & my engine still purring/running sweet as a nut  I've used Castrol edge professional & Quantum (which I believe is now made by Fuchs) not Castrol anymore? So my vRS gets either oil.

I also agree with Offski on what he is explaining as regards oil but I don't do no more than 6,000-7,000 miles a year with a mix of motorway (35-40%) & around town (60-65%) & always drop the oil every year (12 months, fixed servicing) I always check my oil & add a little top up (if needed)

Also checking on quantum's website they actually recommend quantum platinum 5w-40 (fixed service, 12 months, 15,000km)

Quantum longlife 5w-30 (variable service, 24 months, 30,000km)

This is also the same for the 220/230/245 vRS 2.0T

Basically I don't think either would hurt especially if you are dropping the oil every year (12 months, fixed service)

You are correct, Fuchs now make Quantum. They are re branded oils from the Fuchs range.

Sorry I was looking at the wrong link when I posted yesterday.

I meant this Quantum product, the platinum 5W-40 which is quite a bit cheaper than the equivalent Castrol Edge but based on the comments so far it doesn't sound like an inferior product.

Oilman - Looks like you don't sell Quantum? Any reason for this? I see you do have Fuchs but it looks to be more expensive.

I've tried to get the quantum branded stuff, but the brand is owned by TPS. Fuchs are not allowed to sell it to anyone else, so if I want it I have to get it through TPS just like everyone else. I haven't spoken to them in a while but last time we did they wanted to keep it exclusive to themselves. Dead end. Shame, I reckon I could sell loads of it.

Cheers,

Ebay for quantum oils. Tends to come from TPS or dealership sellers.

Thanks all for the feedback, much appreciated.

Sorry to hear that oilman, if that changes then I'll be back to shopping with you :)
