Slow to crank when cold?

Featured Replies

This morning it was 2.5 degrees and the car started first time and fairly fast, but it when it cranked, it cranked quite slowly, like it was struggling almost. Is this normal given the temperature?

Thanks

I would get the battery checked out.

Hmm okay, I waited for all the dash lights to go out. I will get the battery checked.

We are entering the time of year when batteries die I had to replace mine last week.

Also not forget to mainten good servicing as it's important in more difficult conditions ..

with a basic multi meter  you can check .  12.6v plus after the battery has been standing, my new battery is a tad under 13v. If any doubt and the battery is giving  a decent reading you can then check it with the engine running and you should get about 13.8, if you are not its the alternator. These readings do vary according to battery manufacturers but are in the ball park.

An update on this - Getting the battery checked out on Thursday. In the mean time, it was about 5 degrees this morning and when I turned the electrics on, the parking sensors when haywire! They turned on and off constantly and the parking sensor button flashed on and off lots. This then stopped when I turned the engine on. I do also have issues with the parking sensor working when the engine in running most of the time as well. Not sure if related, but I had a xenon dipped beam fault pop up[ a few days ago, the bulb was out, but after restarting it came back on and the warning went away after a few mins.

Strange electrical gremlins can also be a symptom of a failing battery

batteries can happen to go through a  "shock"  situation sometimes ...it's not easy to explain but happened to a previous car of mines and was dedtermined by a qualifies electrician after the battery was tested in a special diagnostic for batteries.

After that it was ok and lasted for long time and winters.

Just have in mind that if once happens then do not blame directly the car.

Sheesh, either try charging your battery or change it....

Glowplugs are kicking in on cold starts at this time of year and your battery is flat or dying and can't handle it.
