Oil Change Interval question

Featured Replies

Hi Folks,

This is my first post on here, so firstly I'd like to say Hello to everyone.

This forum has been a great source of information to me recently, so thanks very much.

I bought a 64 plate 1.6 TDI Ocatvia back in January.  About 4000 miles in I was alerted that it needed an oil change.

As the previous service was a year before I got it, I arranged for a full service to be carried out by a fairly well renowned independent garage.

I should have queried this with the garage at the time, but when I got the car back, I checked the service information straight away it told me that an Oil change would be due in 6500 miles.

I've done done around 8k since and it is prompting me for an oil change again.

Is there any way I can check if the service interval is fixed or variable?  I've had a look in the settings but can't find anything.  Is this something only a dealer can check?

I'm assuming that it is fixed to 6500 miles, which is pretty low.  I was planning on swapping the oil every 10k.

I'm just a bit concerned that it might be variable and the car is sensing the oil is bad or something.

I've checked the oil level and it seems ok, albeit slightly lower than I would expect, but not cause for concern, I don't think.

Apologies if this is a stupid question, I'm pretty useless at this type of thing.

Any help much appreciated.

Well they've done something wrong at the service if it really said 6500 miles straight away.  It should say 9300 miles on fixed or on variable it says 18600 or shows "---" for a few days while it thinks about it.

In the UK

Fixed interval is 9300 miles (15k km) or 372 days

Variable interval is up to 18600 miles or 744 days, but could go lower as low as 9000 miles if the computer decides you driving it wrong or the oil is rubbish.

The service reminder nag iirc comes on about 900 miles before its due so about 8400 miles on a fixed interval. Changing eventually to "Oil Service now" or similar indication (depends on the dash display fitted, MFD or basic) at 9300 miles.

If you run out of time (1 yr on fixed) the service indicator comes on then .

Should be 9,400 miles / 372 days when set for fixed servicing, but what is 100 miles between friends.

So basically the Service Interval needs correctly resetting at services.

My guess is that originally it was on Variable / Flexible Servicing and the attempt to change that to Fixed on the car has failed.

I was going to suggest a 'sticky' thread so people could refer to servicing but it's such a minefield.

As per above answers - 9300miles or 9400miles or 372 days or...   It's all over the place!

Put simply your car is more than 3 years old so that get's rid of another hornets nest of service plans. According to Skoda:

fixed priced service for cars over 3yr

So it's 10,000 miles or 12mths.  Nice and easy for everyone to remember.

re:  previous service  -  the service reset wasn't carried out properly (or perhaps not carried out at all ).  If you're going to change oil every 12mth then it really doesn't matter if it's on fixed or variable regime...  just change it every 12mth - again, nice and simple.

Issue being these are cars build in Countries with Litres, Kilometers and then imported to countries using Imperial Measures and Miles.

So Dealerships are happy enough with doing fixed at 10,000 miles, and the Manufacturers / Warranty providers makes no big deal going over the 9,400 miles that their convrsion shows.

Fixed price rip off.  Same price even if no Spark Plugs or Air Filter or Fuel filter is supplied & fitted.

How can 20% VAT be paid on parts and labour when the Parts are not provided and the labour time not taken to change the parts not replaced,

not even time taken to check them.

It is not like buying a Meal Deal and you binning the crisps. At least you get the crisps.

Here the person getting not much is paying too much and the person getting all the consumables is getting an OK deal.

You didn't take your'e car to Halfords? Did you...

They don't have the correct tool/software to reset the service schedule.

I personally would get the car changed to fixed if not on fixed at the moment & change the oil every year.

Hey, thanks for calling me a friend ski!! :biggrin:

But to annoy everyone with pedantic trivia..

It's actually 15,000 km which is 9320.5679 miles. So depending on whether Skoda rounds up or down. Which might depend on the car, or whether the service guy took it for a 21 mile test drive.... that's my excuse anyway!

Are there Maxidot that come up showing 9,300 miles if you reset the fixed servicing?  i have not seen any, but not seen all so just wondering.

Does it matter? I was just making up excuses....
