Charged for MOT abandonment, but NOTHING was checked.

Featured Replies

My wife dropped of our MKii Octavia for its MOT today,

I had a phone call from the garage saying they couldn't open the bonnet as the handle broke,

When I arrived I was told that the MOT was abandoned because of this,

I said ok thats understandable  but enquired as to what was the rest of the MOT was like wheels, suspension ect, ect.

only to be informed that nothing was checked  as the bonnet handle broke at the beginning and it was registered as an abandonment immediately.

So I challenged them on the fact that having paid for an MOT test I understand that certain things that are under the bonnet can't be checked and it will fail because of that fact,

But I wanted to know if any of the other items that are normally checked externally on the MOT had failed so that I could rectify them if they needed doing.

it has 200k miles so im assuming that a few things might need looking at.

So the car had nothing checked on its MOT, I still had to pay for an MOT, I told them to fix the handle and then retest it as it will be free as its not left their workshop.

I was then informed that a full fee will be payable again?

Questions

Can I force the garage to complete the MOT on the rest of the car?

Should I have to pay for a retest fee as the car has not left their garage and the bonnet catch will be fixed within the full 10 days?

(I understand it might fail the MOT again but thats not the issue)

Cheers

Mac.

?

How much did they take for the MOT.

You can not have a retest, you never had a test and it never failed.

Take your business elsewhere, for MOT and any repairs required.

So they cant charge... OP needs to challenge them and demand money back and report to trading standards

Plenty of cheap honest MOT places. I use F1 autocentres, usually between £23-£27 with their regular discount codes

(OCTMOT18 is their current 10% off code)

re page 151,

Section 'N' would need reading and understanding i suppose.

Thank you for the replies,

Just reading through the documents, quite interesting reading so far.

The MOT fee was £35, but im just waiting for the wife to come home with the car to see what was said to her and how much she paid.

Mac.

Page 22, if a test is abandoned then an appropriate fee may be charged. You should get a VT30 and they should complete the test as far as possible, page 99.

Finally,

After Initially being told by the garage that we were going to have to pay the MOT fee and then a full retest fee, it appears that the man on the front desk didn't quite know the full story and was possibly winging it.

When the wife returned the hire car and picked up our car, they said that there was no fee as it was an abandonment and no test was carried out.

So after all that frustration and having put my Mr Angry head on, it appears that the garage knew what they were doing and were not trying to pull a fast one.
Just they had not kept the man on the front desk in the loop. (or me for that matter)

Cheers for all the replies,

Those docs were interesting reading.

Mac.
