09 Octavia Scout Mk ii Stalls and won't start

I've had the car for over a year with occasional stalling that I initially put down to swapping from an Isuzu auto to this.
Time passed with occasional bouts of stalling - usually as pulling off or on slow turns so I took the blame.
It has had occasional "don't want to start moments but always worked.

The day after one of these and after a 15 miles on bypass (50 to 70 mph), stop n shop, then run back it stalled at traffic lights as pulling off and refused to start.
So I called the Orange man who unstuck the starter and told me to get the starter changed - which I did.

I have used and known the garage owner for 20 years - not a trust issue and he is a first class mechanic.

A week later it stalled as turning from uphill, over bump into uphill while changing from 3rd to 2nd and refused to start.
I reversed bump started it and got home.
After parking (optical sensors reported not available) I turned off and tried to restart....

Click, click, click.....

I checked the battery and then decided to try jumpstart so used fully charged deep discharge leisure battery

Click..... then nothing.

When the car stalls are you in neutral or still in gear?    In Gear - This time changing 3 to 2 Not enough oomph as turning uphill

Manual or DSG (automatic) gearbox?            Manual 6 speed

Foot on or off the clutch?                On

Stop/start active or turned off?            What's that........  Auto Restart?? Never known about it.

Have you noticed any trends i.e. does it happen with
a cold or up-to temperature engine, or both?
At temp after driving through busy, slow town traffic

How old is the Scout and how many miles has it done?     09 plate 165,000 miles

What's the battery?                    Varta E43 - NOT new. Voltage dropping visibly during test from 13.25 to 12.68.

Did you buy from a franchised Skoda main dealer,
non-approved dealer or private?

Not as of 5pm.

Though I suppose I should give it another check.....

Nope....

Dead as a dodo......

(The cranking not the electrics)

Sounds like a dodgy connection to me that is causing your issue by the sounds of the sporadic cutting out and non-cranking issues. Have you checked the basics like the battery connections to the fuse box and the chassis earths and the engine earth? Might be worth looking and making sure all the relays are fully seated in the bases as well.

Have you checked for fault codes?

Is it still making a clicking sound when you try and start it?

I wonder if the anti stutter valve is closing and staying closed thus preventing the engine from breathing. I believe you have two problems

1 the car is stalling for reason unknown

2 the car is failing to start after a stall

Is the car turning g over but not firing?

Sorry for the late reply.

It's been hellish here today getting things finished for a new kitchen to start tomorrow.

Just the breakfast things to do now....... B)

I can't get the fault codes yet - no equipment so either my friend tomorrow or the Orange man again....

The starter isn't turning. It clicked until I tried the other battery (jump start), now it won't do anything.

I wonder if rolling back and dropping the gear will unstick the starter.

Then it's back to square one.....

The fact that you have had the same issue with 2 starter motors makes me think you have a bad connection somewhere and it can't draw enough current giving the classic clicking that you get when the battery is flat.

Anyone know if this car has a starter relay or do Skoda use starter relays on any of their cars?

The starter did unstick, but with no room I did not bump start, so just back with the clicking.

Given comments electrical I have ordered a new E44 which should be here tomorrow, as will the mechanic, I hope.....

Battery delivered & fitted mechanic visited......

Click.

Seem that we have an earth problem after all, so it should be sorted tomorrow.....

^_^

So....what happened? Did you find the fault ?
