Need help regarding headlights

Featured Replies

Hello. When I bought the car, it came with Xenon headlights. Problem is, I need to get it MOT (I live in Norway), I can see the self leveling rod is missing and the headlight washer don't work. So instead of all that hassle, I decided to just buy normal OEM headlights and fit them.

Problem is, the wiring. Anyone have wiring for the headlights?. I'll upload some pictures. I think the previous owner just tapped into the wiring I'm not quite sure.

Can anyone tell me, the one that i have circled is daytime running light right?

@ziircom - I can't be 100% certain, but that ribbing on the glass makes me think your headlight unit is for a pre-facelift car, and probably won't physically fit.

However, the bullseye lens on the outside is for a fog light.

Hmm well I got it sorted. My friend over here tells me that is daytime running light? Over here ur always meant to have it on.

Are you 100% certain it's a fog light? I have it connected as daytime running light along with parking light.

My other question is this.

I know these aren't for my year, the ones for my year does not have it I think?

The circled, I didn't connect it, do I have to? Looking at the headlights for my year 04, I don't think it has that part, so I left it as is.

Oh by daytime I mean actually Dipped lol

The light you have circled in first post is 100% the fog light.

Think Kens right about it being pre facelift mk1 unit too?

As to what the other socket is....  nit sure to be honest, but my head say its the level adjustment motor?

Yeah I figured it was the Fog light.. I'll swap the cables around again like I had it before. Does it matter its a prefacelift? They do bolt on fine onto the car and the wiring colors somehow matches the plug too.

Yeah I think its the level adjustment motor. Is it necessary to have it connected? I was just thinking of just adjusting the lights height by using those knobs on the back of the headlights.

Does it not have parking lights, or have I got it wrong?

@ziircom

Well, what age is your car?

in terms of it being Pre face lift on a face lifted car, it wont look right in the space.

Mk1 Octy has a Type H4, dual filament bulb for high beam and dipped beam.

The little bulb you have pointed to as dipped above, is the parking light.

Fog light is correctly identified

@ziircom - As Mac says; your photo is identical to the headlights on my Elegance (post facelift).

I don't know the details of Norwegian auto-lights wiring, but I'd expect H4 bulbs to "just fit" that unit and work presuming you have a plug with the following flat rectangular arrangement {ASCII ART} | _ | {/end} where all 3 contacts are equal length.

Yeah you guys are right. I had it connected the right way before, and I could see it dipped, but I changed it over because my friend goes, i'ts the other way around.. lmao.. He has changed his mind now.. I'll change it back to how it should be.

So, how important is it to connect the level adjustment motor? Will I be fine with it being disconnected and just manually adjust them?

  • Author

Oh, its a 2004 mod. There is just a very small gap between the light and the bonnet. I'm not really bothered by that.

With the greatest of respect... your friend is an idiot :D

Well I connected everything back how I did I think, but now I can't seem to get the Dipped work?? I'm sure I had it before I swapped over, I'm doubting myself now.

Is there a way I can just run a direct wire for dipped somewhere idk? I don't even know which color is which. Can't find a wiring diagram anywhere :/

Maybe later. Isn't this stuff in the back of Haynes?

Only diagrams I can find is for fogs, indicators etc., nothing for the actual headlight. :(

I can answer to this one as it's similar I've in 2000, so it's a pre-facelift version 1996-2000 for headlight and while the frame is the same, the wiring  and height adjustment isn't the same: Old unit (in pic) has 6-pin  connector at the light complex and 2 pins for the height adjustment motor (circled) and the newer version has 8 pins in one connector with internal adjustment motor.

See:

So no, you can leave that out altogether if you don't need height adjustment.

Also I bought replacement lights (old ones are very worn) from Spareto and they sent me wrong lights (my pic above while the ones in your pic would fit), with 8 pin connector and of course those don't fit into car wiring set at all. I just complained them yesterday, no idea if they'll swap those or what.

Doesn't look good anyway as they haven't replied anything and it has been a whole working day time to do so.

This is something that needs wrapping up: Spareto had an error in the catalog (saying 1994-2004 OCUs have same lights (they don't)) and they swapped the ones they sent to correct ones, no expenses to me. No serious problems, just took a long time to solve.
