Indicator Problem

Featured Replies

Hi I’m new to this, I own a Skoda Rapid 2015 plate, car has done 120000 miles running great, but yesterday the indicator lights started coming on by themselves especially the left one and when I tried to indicate to go right the hazard lights came on, it was intermittent to start but now is constant, I took the car to an Auto electrics and they unplugged the battery to reset everything to see if that worked it didn’t so they replaced the indicator stalk, told me it was fixed no problem, as soon as I picked the car up it started again so the technician mechanic said he’s stumped, the diagnostics is showing an implausible fault with indicator, has anyone else experienced this or have any ideas as to what may be causing the issue, it’s ftustrtaing when you have no idea yourself but I’m hoping someone in here has. Thanks again guys and gals

Best to start with an autoscan from VCDS or similar.

Sorry what does that mean  like I said I’m useless with cars, appreciate the reply

VCDS is a 3rd party diagnostic tool for VAG (inc Skoda) cars made by rosstech.

An autoscan gives a list of installed electronic modules, how they are configured and any fault codes.

You might find a local member will to do a scan for free or beer money in the following threads:

It's normally the best starting point for diagnosing issues :)

He put a computer into it yesterday and it came up with a an implausible fault with indicator he replaced the stalk but still fault and still problem

Sure but that's not really enough information.

There are multiple "implausible fault" codes so without specifics, it's hard to suggest anything. More so when the stalks have already been replaced without resolving it issue.

Do you have the original and new part numbers used?

So when he runs a diagnostics there should be a code that would help actually get the to the root of the problem rather than just guessing and  replacing the stalk without really knowing , I’m due to go back today and see him do you have any advice questions to ask I feel I’ve took my car to someone who doesn’t really know what they are doing lol

The information given will depend on the tool they are using. Generic tools will generally give less info than VAG specific ones.

I'd expect a fault code to narrow it down to exactly what part of the stalks aren't happy. The stalks themselves are pretty simple, it's a few slide contacts, switches (for buttons) and resistors so if the slide contacts are in good condition, there's not much else to go wrong.

Assuming the stalks were replaced with the correct part number and the fault code remained the same, it does suggest the stalks are fine and it might be the steering control module that's at fault.

I'm not suggesting it's your problem but have you had the battery checked.

Going back over two months now my car was telling me my throttle position sensor was at fault, the diagnostics said so when the mechanic read the codes. The mechanic said he's seen many VAG cars with these type of faults thrown up. He said hes' not interested in changing the throttle senso @£112 it's a red herring, he pointed straight to the battery before he tested it, changed that and my car has been happy ever after, fingers crossed.
