I'm not happy with xenon headlights of pre FL

Featured Replies

Hi everybody from dark north.

Earlier I had Octavia 2008 with xenon and those low beam lights were fantastic. Now, in 2014 model headlights will turn, ok, but beam is not so good (long and wide) as in earlier model. Increasing power does not do the job because it makes only bright area in the middle of the beam, not there as it's needed and should be.

And there is also something wrong in left side headlight, a bright spot towards right side of the road. And right side is a little bit weaker than left. Hope You understand...

So I have changed bulbs and ballasts from left to right and back and no difference. I also cleaned that right side projector but no difference.

Have You guys studied about these?

Bad projectors? Bad bulbs? Bad ballasts?

Are projectors replaceable if You take out the lamp and open it?

What type of projector there might be?

Thanks in advance.

What do you mean? Have you changed brighter bulbs or more powerful ballasts?

Moi

Yes, with Morimoto 55W ballast and modified D1S bulbs. They work better than original ones.

OE Octavia iii HID headlights use D3S (Osram) bulbs

Have you got Halogen headlamp units with modified HID lamps?

No, original hid units with d3s 35W. You get more power from modified d1s bulbs than d3s if You are using 55W ballasts. D1s works with double voltage compairing to d3s, thats the reason.

That's the main issue with having the auto adjusting headlights; no dash switch to adjust it conveniently.

It's one thing which I noticed fairly early on my car when I first got it was the beam was a bit low. On the motorway it was only about 5 meters in front of the car, which I wasn't happy with.

I raised the beam with the screws on the headlight units, which improved the beam distance very well. I did it initially a little too high (could spot planes :D), but I had the screw head marked, so I was able to fine tune it to both a safe and correct level. I only needed to turn it a smidge to correct the beam, but if you're unsure about doing it yourself, take it a garage as they've the headlight beam tools and wall charts.

You are talking about adjusting, I was talking about weak lumens.

I always adjust my headlights by my own, when needed, so far as it's possible without having flashes from others. They usually set those too low on the workshop.

Forgive me, I've got the wrong end of the stick

D1S and D3S bulb are both ~3200 lumens when used with 35W ballasts. The biggest difference is that D3S have no mercury and run on different voltages which is why the ballasts are different.

At a guess, your modified D1S bulbs aren't sitting in the D3S headlights properly which is why your beam is rubbish. You might also damage the reflectors given the extra heat a 55W kit produces. That'll make your lighting much, much worse...

I suspect if you simply bought a decent upgrade bulb such as the Osram Nextgen ds3 you would get what you want. Its the precise position and length of the arc that really counts, not the lumens.

Also aiming too far/high is going to dilute the beam. You can't expect to illuminate a football field in front of you on dipped beam at mega lux. Other drivers coming towards you won't appreciate it.
