How's your manual gear change, smooth, notchy...

Featured Replies

Had a TPI warranty work done on my SEL 110 6sp (17 plate) gearbox due to reverse gear notchiness, car has done only 9k miles. During the TPI repair the dealership installed the replacement kit wrongly which resulted in a failed repair, however that was promptly rectified by installation of a "fresh" repair kit.

Once I received my Fabia back, initially it appeared to be fine slightly smoother than originally, occasional slight notchiness to select the reverse. Sometime from cold would go into reverse as smooth as anything, sometime that slight notch. I have also noted that the selection of 1st gear is sometime notchy now as well. To be honest it feels more/less the same as before they installed the TPI repair kit (maybe I should just left it alone, not risking tinkering with the gearbox in the first place). Now, sometime the reverse would slot in really smooth and sometime just that slight resistance and then it would slot in (warm or cold engine). Nothing major, bit disappointed with the repair as I expected total smoothness all the time, which unfortunately is not. Recently drove new Mazda 3, the gear changes were smooth as a butter, and now I am constantly compering that experience of Mazda with my Fabia. Now i am constantly homing in on to it, trying it often, its like when you home in onto a dash rattle and you know its there and its driving you mad. I have also noted a slight click sound when stationary (car running) and releasing the clutch pedal, nothing loud but you can hear a distinctive click (not felt through the pedal at all), if I depress the clutch pedal really slow, there is no click????

So the question for members is, hows your gear change feeling on your Fabias, namely reverse/1st, smooth/normal, notchy (bit of a resistance selecting it), any clicking sound when depressing the clutch?

How long is the warranty on warranty (TPI) repairs, just out of interest, as i haven't received any paperwork on this repair, will it be recorded on the system for future reference?

Thanks in advance

You have the Manufacturers Warranty for 3 years, so til 2020.  That covers a Dealership messing up work that Skoda is paying for.

Skoda UK can pick it up with the Dealership if their Techs are incompetent.

Log your concerns, and if it ends up with you needing a new gearbox that will be what it needs.

Had my 18 plate 110 6 gear manual for 8 months now having covered over 6.5k. Use the box quite frequently to maintain performance, the way I was taught many years ago.

Never had any issues with smoothness in any gear and would compare it to my previous Octavia 1.4 TSI 6 speed which was also smooth.

Very pleased with the motor overall.

Back to the dealer me thinks !
