High Beam Assist - Manual override?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I'm preparing a list of modifications to complete on my new Mk3 vRS when I collect it on Saturday.

I note that "High Beam Assist" can be enabled by VCDS.

Once this is enabled, is all control passed to the automated system? Or can I still manually dip the lights with it switched on?

I like the idea of the feature, however at the same time I worry about it not dipping when it should and me blinding any poor oncoming driver with those LED headlights.

Cheers.

If you pull the left hand stalk towards you it will turn off HBA, the symbol in the maxi dot will disappear,  push the stalk away from you and it will activate HBA, the symbol in Maxi dot will return.

The trouble with this is that you will see a car in the distance and the auto system won’t dip the beam instantly so you take manual control and pull the stalk toward you. In the meantime the auto system has dipped and you’ve now flashed the main beam at them after the system has dipped which is all a bit confusing. Also it’s not easy to switch it off with the lights set to dip and you need to turn them on manually to get them off again unless you put the light switch to on, or switch light assist off on the menu. The point of this is to tell you to trust the system when its on. It’s surprisingly good :)

Turning the headlight switch from 'auto' to 'headlights on' (i.e.the 1 o'clock position to 3 o'clock) will also disable auto high beam. If done quickly, the headlights won't switch off whilst going through the sidelights position IIRC.

I activated the auto high beam and gave it a try. I’ve now turned it off again. Not sure if it’s just the road layouts around me but I found the car just wasn’t dipping the high beams quick enough. It’s definitly got potential as a feature but just not quite there yet IMO.

Strange, I have HBA on my 230, Works a treat.  Mine was activated using a VCDS. I'm wondering if theres a setting in VCDS for sensitivity.

I also have my lights to come on with the " Early " setting, could that make a difference?

Witch camera you have, mirror one or integrated to front screen one?

Thanks all for the input. Maybe I'll just enable it and see how it goes, not as if it's difficult to disable once I've added it via VCDS.

If the system is good then I'm happy for it to stay on, my worry is that oncoming traffic round a corner and there is a delay before my lights dip. I don't mind somebody flashing at me, I do mind if the other driver is blinded for any lengthy period of time.

It is sometimes very quick and other times a fraction slower than a human but if you try to override the system you could end up with the main beam on for longer. It takes a bit of time to trust the system but once you do, you only end up overriding it every once in a while. Even if you’ve coded it and you don’t like it, just leave it coded and turn it off in the menu.

I have the Large Triangular shaped one on the windscreen.

Windscreen camera is better and faster one. Some say that this makes HBA work bit better.

You need to enable in the infotainment before activating using the left stalk.

"Light Assist" option needs to be enabled in the Light settings section.
