Suspension - Definitive Explaination for a Noobie

Featured Replies

Right.

Quick responses required, from the informed only please.

Currently driving around on 17" rims, 225/45 profile tyres.

current gap between edge of tyres and arch is 90mm.

Way too high. Some body roll experienced, pitching on hard acceleration/braking, although i do love the way to car rocks when throttle is blipped....:P

However, I've decided i need to lose some of that height, so suspension mod is required.

Can't stretch to a coil-over system, so.....

Can someone explain to me in simple terms the function of

Springs

Shocks/Dampers.

and what altering them will do to the handling of the car?

Seeking to eliminate some of the roll, lower the car, without turning the suspension into steel girders......

As it stands, I could look at either just some Eibach springs, or a Koni Sport suspension Kit........

Feedback required ASAP,need to book it in before i bottle out this time

TIA

Have a read of The Suspension Bible here while you are waiting for one of our resident handling experts to reply. :)

Have you considered changing the ARB's ? They will significantly reduce the roll whilst maintaining the ride quality. They will also improve turn-in and overall handling of the car.

The cheapest method of dropping your car would be to get some springs only. If you get springs that are rated the same as standard, but are just a little shorter, you wont need to change the dampers. However, if you get a different rated (stiffer) spring you should really change the dampers too.

Springs support the car and absorb the bumps.

Dampers basically slow the movement of the spring so you dont end up feeling like you're on a bouncy castle.

ta for replies chaps.

on balance, i'd love to "do it on the cheap" and just do the springs, but the shocks have done over 50k, and with the roads and style i use, additional work with shorter, stiffer springs won't do them any favours. *i think*

So just waiting on a price for the Koni set-up. Oh well. Suppose you can't take the money with you.........

Get some spring inserts from Halfords or your local caravan place. They snap between the coils of your springs and have the effect of making the spring stiffer, ok they don't lower it, but they do make it stiffer. About £20 a set.

Jon, are they any good/safe ?

Sounds incredibly pikey, and, to quote Gorgeous George "I f***ing HATE Pikeys!"

Maybe i should rephrase "doing it on the cheap" to say "i don't want to blow £800 on a set of KW variant 2's.."

and i do want to be lower, if only so i can genuinely say my car to too low for some of the more arthritic members of the extended family to get into........

Was going to use a set on my 4x4 pre coilovers.

Shop owner uses 3 sets on his rangerover, said it helped...helped heck of a lot in fact ;)

Safe, should be, why ever not if towing a caravan etc...

Oh, make ya damned mind up, first you want cheap, then not that cheap

Fairy nuff, get some Eibach or possibly some H&R springs. Under

Some v-maxx coilovers on ebay at moment for £320. Half the price of KW but don't kno if their any good.

Look on *COUGH* 'MK-1V' site as there is a group buy for 'FK' suspension from 'awesome'.Seems very good price.

Don't know how good 'FK' is tho.

I wouldnt recommend the spring inserts. These are basically the same as the transit chocks in a new vRS. When these are left in it ends up knackering the damper.

already heeded......as already mentioned, going the Koni route.

Also booked standing appointment at Osteopaths is turns out too hard.....

FK are good - decent budget coilovers. £400/£450 ish gets you a set that can drop you up to 80mm+, but it loses a lot of the comfort. But you do get adjustable height.

Remind me, Jon, how long did you run spring inserts for ....? :rubchin:

As already stated it is not recommended to run stiffer springs with the standard dampers but what of the other way round?

Would it be a good idea to run uprated dampers (Koni FSD) with the standard Octy vRS springs? My car could do with some additional handling modifications besides the rear ARB as this has emphasised the inadequacies of the standard dampers - however I do not wish to lower the car as I have enough trouble negotiating some of the sodding speed humps with the ride height as standard.

Any ideas?
