I have just bought a 2018 Skoda Octavia Ambition, and i can't seem to get the Smartlink setup for the car. 

So far, the steps I've taken were:

 

1) phone Bluetooth on (and paired with the car)

2) USB cable plugged in 

3) navigate to App menu on the car computer screen

 

All I get is still a message to plug in a device/phone via USB....any pointers of what I'm doing wrong or what am I missing in the process?

What phone is it and what cable are you using?  If it’s an iPhone you’ll need to use the genuine cable that came with it - it just doesn’t work with cheap third party cables

All sorted it turned out it is my phone's slightly faulty usb connection. When tested with a different phone all works well.

 

One a separate note, the 10 second screen auto turn off resets over time you turn off the car...is there any way around that?
