Will 245 fit standard 18" rim

Featured Replies

Picked up a set of one season old Michelin Alpin tyres for this winter with 9-10mm of tread left. Paid 150 for 4

They are 245/45/18 and the tyres on my Octavia vrs mkII are currently 225/45/18. I have the 18" rims which came as standard with the facelift model. Does anyone know if these will fit?

Cheers

Standard tyre size for Octavia vRS mkII preFL is 225/40-18. Your 225/45-18 has 3.5% bigger circumference (22 mm increased diameter).

Compared to the standard tyre: If you fit 245/45-18, the circumference will be 6.3% bigger circumference and 40 mm increase in diameter. In addition the tyre is 20 mm wider (10 mm closer to both fender and suspension strut).

I don't know the rims specs, but assuming 7.5 inch wide and ET51 (a common Skoda rim). The 245/45 tyres will fit on the rim, but I don't think it will be wise to install them on your car. The tyres are simply so much bigger, it's a high risk that the tyres will rub. The critical point is towards the suspension strut. I also suspect that they will rub at full lock and/or at suspension compression.

And then comes the legal and insurance complications......

I fitted that size on some vRS Zenith wheels when I had my Scout.  The taller suspension on that allowed them to fit - just. There was just about enough room for the first joint of my little finger to fit (photo somewhere if you search the forum).  There won't be that much room on your vRS.

Where are you as I might have a solution?  Send a PM if you prefer.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I see now that they are a fair bit bigger from the calculators that you posted.

I have it booked in to the local garage on Tuesday and will see what they look like on the car for clearance. Don't want to end up with them scrubbing at full lock or under suspension load. They are in good nick so if it looks questionable at all I will just move them on and go again.

Have pm you location Jeeves. If it was that close on the scout it doesn't look hopeful.

Will report back later in the week

Interested to know how you got on. Any news?

Fitted the tyres. No issues with clearances. Full lock is fine and clearance of a wee finger between the suspension strut and tyre. Yet to bottom out the suspension in use but have been along some fairly lumpy b roads with no signs of scrubbage.

The sidewalls sit fairly tall but don't overhang/bulge over the rim. The ride is plush in comparison to the lower profile that was on there. I have lost some of the immediacy on turn in and when pushed towards the grip limit on long bends they dont quite provide the same stable base to lean on.

All that said, the stopping power in lying water and the traction when pulling away are terrific. Road noise is less too, that may be due to the fact two of the summer tyres I removed were fairly bald.

That's good news. Just check the shoulder clearance at its nearest point to the wheel arch at about 3/4 turn. It sounds like the firmer vRS suspension is the saving grace as I think that with the exception of the Scout the softer suspension on other models might allow fouling.

Also check for fouling when hitting a bump/depression while turning/under load. When it comes to MOT time the wheel arch liner will hopefully be completely covered with road grime with no signs of rubbing - especially if you don't push the envelope just beforehand. ;)
