Front Speakers Problem

Featured Replies

Right, I seem to have landed myself in a whole heap of mess and would really appreicate it if one of you guys could help me out!

I have been following tfboys great guide on fitting new front speakers, I am a complete novice at this but always willing to give things a try.

I bought myself some Infinity Refernce 6512i speakers, along with these spacers from car audio direct.

Great I though, ready made spacers. I also figured getting these speakers without cross overs would make my life easy.

Firstly, the spacers aren't deep enough, my speakers are 61mm deep, and the spacers dont reach 40mm, which is about what TFboys guide states.

The other problem is, as you all know, the original speaker connection is a plug, and this is different on the speakers.

I would really apprecite it if firstly, someone could tell me how I go about sorting the spacer problem, am I going to have to make some??

Secondly, how do I rewire the connection to fit my new speakers, Im not bothered about disabling the standard tweeter that came with the car.

Thanks all, James

For the first it sounds like you need some MDF and a jigsaw :D

For the second, I took the cables that come with the speakers and cut about 15 cm off the end, including the spade connectors. Then I bared about 20mm of the cable at the end, folded it over so it makes a kind of flat end, and soldered it to make it stiff. This then plugs into the little VAG plugs. If you want the tweeters still connected, bare a similar 20mm length half way up your little wire, fold it over and tin it the same way. This plugs into the other plug.

I plugged the ends from the big spade into the coloured wire, and the ones from the small spade into the brown one. You could do it the other way round, just be consistent at both sides and ends of the car.

MDF and Jigsaw for the spacer. Make sure you dont make the spacer too thick. ie 2 x18mm mdf. As I found this to sit too far out and vibrate on the door card.

I have a big bit of melamine, will this be just as effective?

Thanks :)

The other thing is, what is used for insulation?, I really am a complete novice to this.

Also, I have noticed then that I 'short' the 2 + wires together, and the 2 - wires together. With regards the tweeter, as I have co-axials do I need to have those wires disabled? Will I still get the full range of sound?

Im altogether confused and bemused! Sorry

Not sure what you mean by this. What are you insulating and which wires are you shorting?

Personally, I'd disconnect the existing tweeters - with the new speakers you'll get too much treble and it will sound tinny.

If you're going to the trouble of fitting new speakers, I'd use proper speaker cable direct from the HU to the speakers and leave the orignal wiring in as is.

As previous poster, I'd encouraging disabling the existing tweeters as they're not great.

One +/- will be from the headunit to the door speaker...the other +/- goes from the speaker up to the tweeter.

Therefore to disable the tweeter, rather than shorting the wires together as you've described, you can connect the +/- from the head unit to your new speaker, and leave the other +/- unconnected.

As to which is +/- is which...can't remember, I used trial and error... :)

I've done that, did as said and soldered two 'plugs' and used exisiting wiring. Works a treat! Thanks
