Reinforced Variable Boot Floor for Heavy Loads

Featured Replies

I need to create a level boot floor strong enough to take a 500kg-600kg distributed load in my new Skoda Superb Mk III Estate. As a subsidiary goal I want space for roof bars to be carried under the floor, and some storage. I have a space saver spare wheel.

This is a thread to debate and document the mini project.

As owners are aware, the space under the raised boot floor is roughly a 1m x 1m pizza box, with a height of 100-125mm.  Spec points are:

1 - My spare wheel seems to dish the bottom floor (ie spare wheel cover) in the middle, so if I do a rigid frame to the full depth it may well rock on the centre.

2 - Rigidity is needed to avoid potentially bending my roof bars or anything else there.

3 - The load weight needs to be channeled to those areas under the sub floor which can take it, to avoid damaging the sub-floor or potentially the plastic fittings around the edge (eg slots for storing the luggage cover).

4 - It would be nice to be able to access the dead space around the spare wheel underneath without taking my reinforcement out of the car, and to be able to fit the luggage cover in there with the reinforcement in place.

This is a piccie of my initial concept - below.
