Misfire problem after running almost out of fuel.

Featured Replies

Hello! My name ist Michael from Vienna/Austria. I put my skoda community post simply in the translator but I hope you can read it anyway. I have a stupid problem. Don't hesitate to ask if you don't understand my denglish. :)

Yesterday almost my heart slipped in my pants.
My girlfriend drove yesterday and I fell asleep. She has virtually drained the tank. It was certainly 10km with 0km remaining range. He has not stuttered yet. But he must have been pretty dry.
(Just recently I changed the fuel filter.)
We went straight to refuel.
Anyway, then shortly afterwards always something at the traffic lights and geruckelt the engine control people flashed on (engine symbol) - but not the EPC lamp.
At a slightly higher speed that disappeared immediately, to light up again at the next traffic light.
He also jerked away from 700U to about 2000U, as if he would only run on 3 cylinders. In addition, he has but bravely accelerated. The lamp was also off.
Then I read out the error with Torque - see attachment.
I found all sorts of horror messages. No compression, burned exhaust valves, etc.
There was also a post saying that injectors could be misplaced. Would be plausible because it justament occurred after the almost-empty-running.

Day 2:

A realization in the meantime: I measured with a very favorable compression tester. All 4 cylinders have 9-10 bar. Whether that fits perfectly, I do not know. I do not think so. But the deviation between the individual cylinders is very low or absent. That makes me halfway positive.

But the non-circular running is still there after application of the Liqui Moly Injector cleaner and the engine indicator light comes sporadically at idle.

He runs rough and sounds like on 3 cylinders - but only up to 2000U - then he turns up cleaner. I do not dare to give much gas, but I fancy it is missing performance.

New spark plug on No. 4 with the defect entry see first post is inside - as well as a new ignition coil.

Help please

Welcome.

What spark plugs are in and with what gap, and are all the pipes / breathers properly sealed, the turbo intake especially if plugs were out and the pipe moved to give access?

If all 4 spark plugs are correct with the correct gap and the ignition coils are all OK and the fuel filter is ok then maybe you are at the point of needing a replacement Water pump / Supercharger magnetic clutch.

?

Has the car had a new water pump?

How many km has your car done, and are you running on Super Unleaded / 98 ron or higher octane?

Sparks and ignitors are all new.

Supercharger charges. I can hear the queak when the magnetic clutch is engaged.

The failure happened during driving. I started fine and at the end of 200km it started. Right AFTER the almost drained fuel tank.

What about Injector No. 4 clogged up?

When you refuelled did you use same normal brand or different lower ethanol one. (not your usual equivalent of Super Unleaded) ie 97+ ron

I have had similar issues in past bad fuel, check spark plugs, coilpacks, etc..

Old thread  below regarding compression a good interesting read, 9 Bar is a little low, but best read the thread regarding method of compression test.

Cold vs warm engine etc.

My readings in PSI taken by tuning shop when car was running good was:

Cylinder 1 = 164

Cylinder 2 = 164

Cylinder 3 = 162

Cylinder 4 = 162

https://www.unitconverters.net/pressure/bar-to-psi.htm

10 Bar = 145PSI

11 Bar = 160PSI

Hi. I'm not clear which engine you've got, but, since you were almost out of fuel, my thoughts would tend towards either injectors need bleeding (diesel) or rubbish from the tank base has got into the fuel feed (petrol).

It is a Mk2 Fabia vRS 1.4 TSI 132 kw Twincharger.

Thanks all for your help.

Meanwhile I checked some things and my local  skoda dealer immediately said, that the high pressure pump needs to be changed. They had this issue several times in the twinchargers and normal 1.4 TSIs.

I´m discussing the same in the german speaking skoda-community forum.

What do you think about my posting #21? The rail pressure is rising propotionally acording to revs.

The high pressure pump ....I don´t know. If it is the failure - why would always cylinder 4 has the missfire error in diagnosis?

Edited by Narrischer

Because it is the one with the issue due to the manifold and the plug gets burnt out and valves get burnt out.

This has always been the issue that VW never sorted out by discontinuing the CAVE engine & going to the CTHE.

?

When was your car built and has it ever had the Breather Pipe / Valve mod or a software update.

& has your DSG needed or had Service Campaign '34F7' or '34H5' if built from 2012?

  • Author

It got the latest OEM software which runs more rich.

It was built 07/2010 but never needed much oil.

I changed to Motul X-Clean 5W40 and since 80.000km it doesn´t have almost any oil consumption. Maybe half a liter /15.000km.

It got that DSG update which shifted the gear change points upwards to prevent low-speed-pre-ignition.

What about injectors? The mechanic at the local dealer said this is not very likely.

I doubt that it is related to running low on fuel, I reckon you had another 50km of remaining range at least.

@J.R. I guess so too. But it was strange because it was accurately happening at the very end of fuel in tank. So this was my first thought.

Thanks @Offski for Lucifer´s guide.

I just wrote in skoda community forum:

What I've just found out: the compression tester you can forget. Today it only displayed 4 bar on all 4 cylinders. It can not be. It displays house numbers. I hope and pray that the 9 bar I measured yesterday on all cylinders still fit and that the 17 € unit was good for exactly one test. : Wacko:

Further finding: The error does not migrate with, if I replace the spark plug 4 with SP 3, or if I replace the ignition coil 4 with the number 3. So with every combination the error of Posting 1 P0304 Missfire Zyl. 4th

If I remove the ignition coil 4 while running, nothing changes at the non-round engine running.
When I pull off ignition coil 3, it collapses immediately and it shakes it violently.
The same with Cyl. Second

It's really as if in Cyl. 4 simply no mixture is generated. There is nothing injected. Not even if I delete the error and start again.

Interesting is this posting of Lucifer. He writes:

Because the fueling system is a 'demand type', the quantity is measured and the correct amount of fuel is used (as set in the ECU). So when a misfire occurred, the ECU had no comprehension that the engine could possibly be running as a result of the misfire, only lean. It would then start increasing constantly expecting the misfiring to stop, to the point that the engine would be completely stalled and the cylinders were full of fuel.
This fuel would leak into the sump and mix with the oil which is detrimental to its function. This is another catalyst to the engine ware.
Revo found that cylinder 4 on the other hand, being fueled by the common rail fuel supply, what starved of fuel. This is because the capacity of the filling system was max'd out; injectors 1, 2, and 3 were at full flow and there was not enough fuel left to be able to supply injector.
SEAT released a new high-pressure fuel pump towards the end of 2011 as an attempt to stop the cylinder 4 starvation of fuel, which may or may not have helped, but did not address the cause of the problem.

Now when you've got a serious bout of misfiring, it's obvious. The majority of the time, the engine would have invisible misfiring. When I logged the car, I found that it was constantly but not as bad as it was detectable. So this problem is going on to this degree undetected for a lot of cars, leading to piston 4 finally going.

So....maybe in the end the high pressure pump.
