Cataclean Petrol

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have used Terraclean in all of my past cars but notice Evo magazine has a positive 'article' on Cataclean.

Anyone used or got thoughts on Cataclean  petrol please,

Ta,

John

@john2017   what are you going to use this on, is it a 1.2 tsi?

 If so then why?

Yes my 1.2 tsi as a cleaning de carbon de sludge treatment.

If your 1.2tsi fuel is direct injected into the cylinder then the inlet valve is unlikely to benefit from any form of 'wash' and I am unsure how burnt fuel is supposed to clean anything after it leaves the cylinder.

Put a couple of tanks of high octane fuel with higher detergent levels through and give a bit of an 'Italian tune-up' will probably shift as much carbon as anything else would, otherwise I'm fairly sceptical.

About 15 years back Australia had a problem in remote aboriginal communities with youths petrol sniffing and suffering irreversible brain damage.

One of our fuel companies produced a 91 Octane substitute called 'Opal', a low aromatic fuel that did not give the 'high' of normal fuels. I remember reading promotional material claiming similar burn/power characteristics, but with the benefit of leaving an engine much cleaner. There were the usual photos of then current Toyota 2.5L multi-point inject motor's inlet valves  after several thousand kilometres with the normal 91Octane fuel appearing rather cruddy and the Opal fueled engine valves almost pristine.

It was unclear whether the 20% lower aromatic content was responsible for the cleaning effect or maybe just the much lower sulphur content than our conventional 91 Octane.

The simple fact is there is often much poetic license used in any advertising claim and petrol (and additive) companies have been guilty of stretching the truth many, many times over many, many years.

However Opal was successful in its main aim of reducing the glue sniffing habit.

Thx for the info. Gerry - does you octavia have the 1.4 engine that has active cylinder technology?

Lived in Melbourne back in 2007 and visited Adelaide back in the 1980's - fond memories - things getting cold for you down under yet!!

The 1.4tsi in the Octavia doesn't have ACT, that version was only used by Skoda in the mk3 Superb and that version of the Superb was never released in Aus.

Mine is the Euro 5 140bhp version and I am still very impressed by its economy and performance even after more than 4 years and 50k km.

The weather this Summer so far is a bit wierd. A couple of hot days, some high humidity and wind. Highest daytime temperature the other day was a chilly 18 degrees which is very unseasonal.

My daughter is in the uk at the moment so I know it is chilly there for her.
